.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Turkey Warning
Author Unknown
Tell me, Mr. Turkey,
Dont you feel afraid
When you hear us talking
`Bout the plans weve made?
Cant you hear us telling
How were going to eat
Cranberries and stuffing
With our turkey meat?
Turkey, heed my warning:
Better fly away;
Or you will be sorry
On Thanksgiving Day.

I think winter has arrived .... but
I re-filled the hummingbird feeder. He was here yesterday so who knows when he will leave. Sure hope he doesn't freeze tonight.
This afternoon I need to cover frost sensitve trees and plants. It's suppose to get down to 31 tonight but in the farm areas, it usually gets a few degrees colder.

In a castle that had a deep moat
Lived a chicken a duck and a goat.
They wanted to go out
And wander about
But all they needed was a boat.

I'm one of those annoying types who has to have the most recent updates..
But, I won't do that just yet.
I need to get something else working before that.

The hummingbird was back at the feeder again this morning.
I wondered if I should quit filling the feeder ....then I found this on The Hummingbird Web Site.
"FALL MIGRATION TIP: Don't take your feeders down until two weeks after you see the last hummingbird! Don't worry about discouraging your hummingbirds from migrating.
Looks like I may be feeding him all winter! LOL

Had one checkingout my eyeglasses not too long ago.
He didn't seem very impressed that they were on my face.

Ode to a Hummingbird by Laurence Overmire
Light shot through diaphanous wing
Fifty beats per second
Its long beak dipped in the flower of
Lifes sweet nectar
Too fleet to see without an informative eye
A blur in the green gasp of forest needles
Yet when spied, delight
The happenstance of cats catching
Fates vivid colors dancing
In the rainbow shade
Twixt day and night.

The Hummingbird
by Angel L. Villanueva I opened my eyes,
And there she was,
The hummingbird.
Funny how fragile she is...
And yet, so powerful in flight.
I gaze in amazement as she hovers,
Searching for that one flower,
To give her what she so desires.
Selectively, carefully, she searches.
The hummingbird.
What a beautiful creature.
As I admire her,
I can't help but to think...
What if I'm the flower she searches for?
I smile...and close my eyes.
There is no creature that compares to her...
The hummingbird.

I still have no idea why he checked my glasses out, but when he was done giving them a thorough inspection he spun about and left the area of my head, in no obvious hurry.
I'm glad that I do not have that effect on bobcats and bear.

Both poems about hummingbirds are wonderful.
They are such amazing little things. I love to sit in the dining room and watch them.
Everytime I think they have left for the winter, they show up again on the patio. They aren't even afraid of the dog anymore.
