A New York Times tech executive who was allegedly shot dead by his elderly in-laws in California was in a vicious war with them and his estranged wife for being transgender, according to court documents.
Jonathan McKinsey’s wife, Candice Jang, filed for a restraining order against him in 2025, and he replied by filing a restraining order of his own.
McKinsey claimed Jang had tried to pull medical tubes out of his body when he was transitioning from a woman to a man in 2010, the restraining order records, obtained by The Mercury News, said. The two married in 2011.
He also claimed in the same filing that his mother-in-law branded him a “disgusting queer” and a “pervert” after falling out with him over one of their children’s choice of clothing.
The 40-year-old, who was the Times’ head of engineering for games player experience, was gunned down in a sports complex parking lot in Dublin, Calif., around 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Cops arrested his in-laws Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, who are accused of murder.
Jang and McKinsey had a violent history. During one alleged incident, he claimed Jang beat him with a frying pan in 2013, he alleged in his request for a restraining order. He also accused Jang of abusing their children verbally.
His restraining order petition also alleged Chen, Jang’s mother, was verbally abusive to the couple’s children, with arguments about the children’s clothing.
McKinsey was also charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse by Alameda prosecutors in 2025 after Jang called Dublin police to report McKinsey had hit her six-year-old son in the face with an open hand.
She also told investigators about a 2018 domestic violence incident, where McKinsey bruised her left arm, the documents say.

So, the victim was a woman who "transitioned" to a "man" in 2010, and married Candice (presumably an actual woman?) in 2011 (despite Candice pulling medical tubes out of him (her) a year earlier?). They had children (not sure how a "trans man" could inseminate a woman, but maybe the kids were adopted, or were from in vitro using a donor?). The mother called the victim "queer" and a "pervert", and didn't like his (her?) parenting style.
This story reads like a game of "Mad Libs".

HELP or is it just me??? Jang had to be a pervert also if she was involved with a woman...Her parents didn’t have a problem with that?? Why did they call HIM a pervert?
There is a picture of HIM as a man in the article and it says UPDATED -that’s clearly a man...apparently BEFORE whatever!!!!
Except for the shooting part, just a typical day at the NYT.

Why bother complaining about statements of fact? Oh, never mind, this was going on in a DEMOCRAT-run state, so it makes sense to bring it up.

I don't play along and when I see "Trans" I simply substitute "He" for "She" or vice versa. Even that seems too much, but I do it for accuracy's sake, something that isn't in their wheelhouse.
By the way-I wasn’t referring to you as a rube-that is how they see all of us!

I always admire the efficiency of the Chinese.
I understand but that doesn’t clear up my confusion over the objection of the inlaws...their daughter apparently was in a relationship with a WOMAN but that was definitely a man in the BEFORE pictures...I know I’m old and growing older by the minute but I can’t sort this nonsense out...
This story fails to mention that while it’s possible to dress up, do things, add things, and take pills to look like a man (sometimes pretty convincingly), it is not actually possible to transition from a woman to man. It’s also not possible for a white person to transition to a black person and visa-versa. I’ll also never be Captain Kirk...even if I bought a cool Yellow Uniform with black pants and a phaser.. It’s that whole biology and reality thing they skipped in this article...as if it didn’t exist. Still, pretty crazy story overall.
