The woman accused of fatally stabbing an elderly Mount Dora, Florida, couple on New Year’s Eve 2022 has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, and her lawyers are arguing the murders were driven by psychosis.
Opening statements began this week for the trial in the fatal stabbings of Florida couple Darryl Getman, 83, and Sharon Getman, 80.
The Getmans were found stabbed to death in their home after they invited Vickie Lynn Williams into their home to help her out.
Williams’ DNA was found on the murder weapons, and her fingerprints and bloody footprints were at the scene.
Testimony by neighbors and surveillance video also supported claims that Williams was acting erratically in the senior living community prior to the double murder.
Williams knocked on the Getmans’ door and asked for help. She asked if she could take a shower.
The Getmans let Williams in their home, and she took a kitchen knife and stabbed the elder couple to death.
Williams pleaded not guilty to the murders, and her defense team is arguing that the fatal stabbings were driven by psychosis.
The state of Florida is seeking the death penalty.

A jury heard opening statements Monday in the trial of Vickie Williams, accused of murdering an elderly couple inside their home at the Waterman Village retirement community on New Year’s Eve in 2022.
State prosecutors argue Williams killed Darryl and Sharon Getman before fleeing in their car, while defense attorneys claim Williams was suffering from psychosis and should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Defense attorneys asked the jury to return a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, arguing that Williams was experiencing a mental health crisis.
Lawyers told jurors Williams’ was diagnosed with schizophrenia in May 2022. They also explained previous incidents where Williams entered a stranger’s home claiming she owned it.
Defense attorneys stated that in the hours leading up to the tragedy, Williams was wandering the retirement community experiencing severe escalating psychosis.
“Her mind was completely detached,” the defense argued in court, stating that delusions led Williams to believe the Getmans were planning to harm their children and that she had to stop them.
