Enrollment in SNAP grocery aid is dropping faster than expected

PHOENIX (AP) — Enrollment in the biggest federally funded food aid program in the U.S. dropped by more than 13% in a 12-month span — a decline far steeper than the government estimated as work requirements and other provisions of President Donald Trump's "big beautiful bill" take hold.

Those losing coverage in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, include people who don't meet the tightening requirements to participate, and, advocates say, some who qualify for the help but are rejected because they miss deadlines or don't have the needed documentation handy. It's too early to tell exactly how many fall into each group.

It's also unclear how many have lost coverage because some state agencies that run the programs are overwhelmed trying to keep up with changes. That was the case in Arizona, which saw the nation's largest enrollment drop.

Tia Fields, who analyzes social safety net policies at the advocacy group Invest in Louisiana, said a the main reason she's seeing people lose coverage is not failure to meet work requirements. "A lot of it is administrative paperwork," she said.

Proponents of welfare reform hope the roll reductions are driven by people earning too much to keep qualifying — a sign that policy changes are behaving as intended for a program they assert is riddled with fraud.

"If there are people that are leaving the welfare rolls because they're working and they're moving forward," said Rachel Sheffield, a research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, which pushed for stricter requirements for SNAP, "that would be a step forward."

I’m not sure it’s because of the mass deportations, or because they can’t buy their Ho-Ho’s anymore with SNAP.

How much of the drop was deporting illegals?

A little bit of both, plus the rules are more stringent, eliminating fraud..............

Mass deportations are going to put a dent in welfare but that’s going to take awhile and Americans have short attention spans.

As Rush said “liberals measure success by how many people we have to help. Conservatives measure success by how many people no longer need help.”

Thanks for the reminder of Rush's line.

And as Milton Freidman said: "There's no such thing as a free lunch."

That or illegals not wanting to be visible, so they're refusing SNAP so that they can't be traced that way.

This is good news. Obama’s plan since his first term was to turn SNAP into a middle-class entitlement. So he opened up eligibility to the point where middle class families were on Food Stamps. Get the majority of voters on the dole - that was Obama’s master plan. Hopefully Trump is beating that back.

You can use SNAP to buy everything else so no, not the lack of sugary food.

Part of it is the deportations, the other part of it is that at least some states are cracking down on fraud, the third part is the economy is actually improving down here on the bottom.

People who were barred from certain job markets by virtue of being actual American citizens are now finding openings.

I assume they’re referring to adults when they write “are rejected because they miss deadlines or don’t have the needed documentation handy.” If they can’t show up on time or have the papers required to get free food, courtesy of US taxpayers, I have absolutely no sympathy for them.

Did PBS publish thinking it was bad news?

“ As Rush said “liberals measure success by how many people we have to help. Conservatives measure success by how many people no longer need help.””

No one on government assistance should have the right to vote

It tempts legislators. Conflict of interest

Ya wanna stop the violence? Anyone who committs violence should have their WELFARE $ CANCELLED. Welfare is a contract. You violate the rules you forfeit your rights to the contract. Rioting will stop immediately.

My ultra liberal sister-in-law in Portland (where else) sent us an article bemoaning the new restrictions on snap. One of the examples they touted was that of a young man who decided to take a semester off from college for a needed break. This break did not include taking a job. Apparently he had been receiving snap. Although I don’t know why a college student just by virtue of going to school should get snap. Anyway, he lost his snap benefits and this was reported as a great tragedy.
