Grok 4.1 has informed me the June 1962 Guns & Ammo magazine had a letter or short article in it about a boy/young man or boy scout who encountered a black bear on a mountain trail and shot it with a .22 handgun, killing the bear.
I do not know if it is true.
However, Freepers have vast stores of knowledge. A freeper may even have a copy of the June 1962 Guns & Ammo magazine, or know where one may be accessed.
Any help in tracking down this lead would be appreciated.

There is a Ebay seller with a copy of the May and June 1962 issues. He has a 100% rating but I am not personally acquainted with this seller.
The seller is japic85865
The June issue’s cover shows the content includes “Why Teach a Boy To Shoot?”
I appreciate the information.
There may be libraries which have bound copies of the magazine for 1962.
Dean Weingarden is an excellent guns and bears writer. I know he has written about an Inuit woman killing a bear with a 22.
wrong mag. They seem to have them for sale on the Interwebs, though.
Can’t help you there, but got a bunch of old Handloader and Rifle are premier sister publications owned by Wolfe Publishing dedicated to the precision hobby of ammunition reloading and legacy firearms. They offer detailed “pet loads,” comprehensive cartridge tests, and gunsmithing tips.
This article about Bella Twin has a bit more information.
Guns & Ammo Magazine is different than Guns Magazine.............
The problem is I do not know if the source really has such a letter or if it was made up (Hallucinated) by the AI.
AI Overview
Grok likely confused two distinct tales. The famous account of a .22 killing a bear belongs to Bella Twin, a Cree woman who killed a massive grizzly with a Cooey Ace .22 in 1957. The iconic Boy Scout .22 bear story actually occurred in June 1926, where 14-year-old Scout Fred M. Whiteman Jr. famously shot a bear on a trail.
For a long time, the world record grizzly was one killed in Alaska by a woman with a .22lr
Yes, I issued a correction.
I want to find the Fred Whiteman Jr. story.
Do you have any more details or a link? So far my searches are coming up dry.
A good library will have staff who can look up exact dates of bound journals in US libraries. Used to use National Union Catalog volumes but now online access is common.
“To find exactly which libraries hold specific magazine issues (print, microform, or digital), librarians utilize shared catalogs and union catalogs.”
“WorldCat: The world’s largest network of library content. It catalogs the holdings of thousands of libraries globally, allowing you to search for a specific magazine and see the closest libraries that carry it.”
“OCLC FirstSearch: A research database service offering librarians deep, detailed access to serial union catalogs to facilitate resource sharing and interlibrary loans.”
Hope this helps.
Yes, it helps. I was able to find an issue of a very rare magazine this way in the past. I learned a library in Alaska had a bound copy.
I will check out WorldCat.
Man, look at the prices....
A moose bit my sister once.
