Tired of Selfish Weed Smokers?
American Refugees Substack ^ | 26 August 2025 | Roger Simon

They're everywhere and they don't care

Some would call Norwegian tennis star Casper Ruud—currently competing at the US Open— rude with an e for bringing up something many of us have been thinking for years.

The NY Post reports under the headline: “Casper Ruud hates the weed smell at US Open: ‘Worst part about New York’”

I don’t know about “worst,” but it’s certainly up there. Every time I go to New York I feel as if I’m getting a contact high just walking around midtown Manhattan, a contact high, to be clear, I don’t want.

(This goes for many other cities, notably Seattle, Denver, Portland and everywhere in CA. In the case of Seattle, you trip over smokers getting off the ferry. It’s like an opium den in 19th Century China.)

I have no right to be a prude about marijuana. I smoked it regularly in my thirties. As I detailed in “Turning Right at Hollywood & Vine,” I did a fair number of other drugs popular at the time as well (psychedelics, etc.). Most of them I only tried once (okay, twice) because I am fortunate not to have an addictive personality—except for the ribeye steaks my doctor tells me are lethal for my kidneys and I am currently trying to shake.

As is well known, marijuana has changed over the years, becoming many times more potent. Curious about that, roughly ten years ago when I was still living in Los Angeles, I picked up the new vintage (there were as many choices as at a luxury wine shop) at a couple of the upscale marijuana emporiums then blossoming along Ventura Blvd. One of them had valet parking yet.

That was when people snuck it and there wasn't a weed store on every corner.

Weed (May peace be upon it) is not a drug, it’s a religion. And if an infidel slanders it, there is a fatwa against it.

I’ve heard the same about Oracle Park, where the San Francisco Giants play.

Kathy Hochul must be grinning ear to ear, so proud of the mess she has created.

I’m not too upset about the legalization of weed but really they should have just made edibles legal so the rest of us wouldn’t be forced to smell it all the time

We can't take a walk in the morning without being bombed with the weed stink coming out of cars of people going to work or taking their kids to school.

Bummer that they have to get loaded just to face the day.

It’s really quite funny. For decades, it seemed like everyone smoked cigarettes. Restaurants, bars, on airplanes, in subway stations ... everywhere. And people tolerated it. If a non-smoker didn’t like it, they could move to a different location, ask to be seated in the “no smoking” section or just deal with it.

Then society got all worked up about cigarettes. Taxes went up, No Smoking signs went up. Cigarettes are not quite illegal, but pretty close. Society rejected tobacco to a large extent, and cigarette smokers are second class citizens now.

But they legalized cannabis, and now that stuff is everywhere. If you don’t like it, I guess you can move to a different location, or just deal with it.

Pretty amazing.

In my opinion, it’s all part of control (if they can “outlaw” cigarettes without passing a law, they can do pretty much anything) and also part of creating a passive society (so many people are medicated all the time, it’s, like, whatever dude).

NYS law only allows marijuana smoking where tobacco smoking is allowed. Neither is allowed at the US Open so they should have been fined for that. As for potency yes it’s more potent these days but that only means one would smoke less to get the same high.

I don’t care if people smoke weed. But we need stronger regulation of use of intoxicants in public. You should not be able to smoke weed as you are walking down the street (or swig out of a bottle of vodka while walking down the street either, for that matter). You should only be able to do it in designated areas or at home.

We were in Panama City Beach (FL) for the first time last weekend, and 1) weed smell was everywhere 2) one time the grown kids were in a general store and someone walked up to the counter requesting, “You got some weed today?”

Lucky for me, I went on to Dothan AL for my HS classmate visit, and the smell of azaleas was more evident there.
