How to Start World War III: Ukraine Joins NATO
National Security Journal ^ | 7/9/2025 | Andrew Latham

Ukraine joining NATO would be viewed by Russia as an existential threat, likely triggering a severe and multifaceted military escalation that could lead to a broader European war. The Kremlin has consistently framed NATO’s eastward expansion as the primary justification for its aggression, meaning Kyiv’s accession would be a direct challenge to Russia’s perceived sphere of influence.

Then make a deal for no NATO in exchange for Russia leaving Ukraine. Take away Ukraine’s need and desire to join NATO.

Putin may trust Trump. However, he knows that we have another election coming up in 3 1/2 years. By then President Newsom may invite Ukraine to become a member of NATO. How can we make that kind of guarantee?

NATO’s eastward expansion

Funny how those former "Soviet Socialist Republics" and Soviet satellite countries wanted to get as far away (politically) as possible from Russia when given the opportunity.

Decades of corruption and oppression have consequences, comrade. People don't like you, comrade, because you spent decades crapping on them.

Put very simply: Russia doesn't have the right to whine and moan about "NATO's eastward expansion". Russia CAUSED "NATO's eastward expansion".

At the end of the cold war, Ukraine gave up its nukes based on Russia’s promise to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Why would Ukraine trust any deal with Russia? WRT Russia, NATO is purely a defensive alliance. Russia justified Ukraine’s desire to join NATO by doing what Ukraine feared most - an invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

False premise right off the bat. How exactly does Ukraine joining NATO threaten the existence of Russia? The only thing it threatens is Russia's desire to rebuild its historical empire by dominating Ukraine and who knows what other ambition.

I believe that deal has been offered before, and either used by Europe as a ruse to buy time to build Ukraines military or rejected by Ukraine which is obsessed with being part of the varsity team

Total nonsense but noone is putting Ukraine in NATO.

Russia’s claims of being threatened are total bs.

Is this a high school term paper? Or just AI clickbait? Hard to tell.

Russia is barely holding onto the territory it seized in Ukraine and if it keeps up the current pace of losses it may find China reclaiming, under the same revanchist philosophy as Putin, it’s lost territory that Russia is holding.

If Russia is able to make war on NATO and succeed they would do so. Or at a minimum they would finish the job with Ukraine. But they can’t so they won’t but maybe bluster will cause the NATO to go wobbly.

Consequences! Dire! WW3! Russian tsunami torpedoes! Nth gen aircraft. Hypersonic missiles! Wham! Pow! The west is in for some this time.

Stop posting this nonsense. Ukraine did no such thing. The U.S., UK and France would never have let Ukraine keep any nuclear arms under any circumstances. The Ukrainian independence movement would have ended immediately in 1991 if they didn’t cave to the NATO nuclear powers over that.

Here’s how I know NATO is no offensive threat to Russia.

NATO could totally kick Russia’s butt right now and doesn’t do it.

Russia can’t even beat Ukraine after 3 years and it’s bogged down there.

NATO could easily defeat Russia IF it wanted to and doesn’t need a battered Ukraine to do it.

Or NATO could just go into Ukraine and do it there.

Instead NATO is busy building defenses against a RUSSIAN attack on the Baltic states.

Of course this is a conventional war discussion. NATO also won’t attack Russia because of the nuclear deterrent.

The only one who got Russia invaded in this war is Russia - twice.

You are correct the West also supported Ukraine not having nukes.

So?? That defeats your entire argument that NATO wanted to threaten Russia.

Russia already assumes that the EU and US intend to eventually bring Ukraine into NATO

We can assume EU/Brussels/London will actually speed the process of admission, as/when Ukraine collapses. They will never give up that bargaining position, narrative or pretend legal right.

They will create some fraudulent government in exile in London, and pretend they are part of NATO.

As for Russia, its there view that now there will be no “Ukraine Government” left to join NATO

Bingo. That has always been the "NATO" issue. Not a Russian fear of being attacked, but a "fear" that it would not longer be able to attack its neighbor.

Ukraine won't join NATO until the war is over. The war won't be over while Putin is President of Russia. Putin will remain its President until Russia loses the war.

All of those things might happen this year, most likely around November-December.

Allowing Ukraine in NATO would be an act of insanity.

1. I have no idea what “entire argument” you’re talking about. Did I say anything about NATO threatening Russia?

2. How does the Ukraine nuclear vs. non-nuclear question relate to NATO’s intentions? The three NATO nuclear powers would never allow ANY of these treaty members to have a nuclear arsenal.

It is clinton, the enemy of the Serbs, who began NATO’s eastward expansion!

Ukraine must accept losses of its territory! And no more NATO!

It was offered by Zelensky early in the war but turned down by Putin. The idea that this war is about NATO expansion, something that was indeed not happening, is a farce. Putin wants to bring Ukraine back under Russian rule.
