Save NASA! Science budget cuts don't help anyone!

If you like all the Science NASA has done since 1961, then wave it all goodby. NASA budget cut to the lowest since 1961 - before there was a manned space program. No more Rovers, probes, [ even 99942 Apophis probes cut, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis ]. There are no private entities that can or will pick up the slack. Cuts to Hubble and to Webb will leave them orbiting junk.

Coupled with the possible collapse of SpaceX from 47's vengeance feud with Musk, the US will no longer have a space program - civilian or military.

These twin disasters in the making will catapult China into the world leader in space. Youth interested in space exploration will flock to China. Others will go to the UK, Europe, India & Japan.

BBB Leaves NASA Gutted. Most Science Projects Ended. Workforce Cut by 30%. No Future Projects Funded. Deep Space Science No More. Arbitrary & Random Cuts by OMB Head Who Hates NASA.

NASA went woke and now they go broke. Shouldn’t surprise anyone.

And this is after NASA wasted billions on SLS, Constellation and Artemis?

This is exactly the attitude that a culture of abundance promotes.

As opposed to . . . “there is no greater need than to advance space science, and that means space science, like absolutely everything else, has to be gutted because WE CAN’T AFFORD IT. We can’t even afford food.”

That’s abundance, deluding oneself into thinking you have choice, vs scarcity, where starvation trumps delusion.

NASA has gone woke. Now it has to pay the price to get serious again. The best they can do now is wave the flag from the 1960s and 70s.
But they have lost the edge. Their problem isn’t money, it’s woke and waste.
They couldn’t get those astronauts home from the space station without Musk. Hell, they couldn’t get them there without Musk or the failed Boeing capsule.

Just use the same arguments he democrats use. “Cutting NASA will kill millions, starve children, and throw granny off the cliff so her wheel chair can be recycled by a billionaire.”

Space travel is a luxury, not a necessity. We’ve got all kinds of problems on the rock let alone what we may gain in the stars. Some things may have to go on the back burner for a while until the funds are available. The porterhouse steak dinner has shifted to smaller less expensive cuts for the moment.

Good post. A robust space program would be good for the country. But as you noted, it’s not a necessity. As an analogy, a family deeply in debt should not be borrowing money to pay for educational vacations. Get out of debt first.

(And yes, I know the government funds even worse programs. Cut ‘em all until we’re out of debt.)

I had the good fortune of meeting the head of OMB in Trump 1.0. His administration is not anti-science, they just know where the waste, fraud and abuse reside.

Yeah, maybe they should have stayed with science. Obama’s Muslim outreach was science?

Still stuck in the 0bama era? That has not been a thing since 45 came into office.

Space travel is a luxury, not a necessity.

There is a national security component to space. Like Air supremacy, space awareness and dominance are vital to our defense and to our war fighters in ways most people do not think about. NASA contributes some to this, but not all that much with DoD doing much on their own.

We have sent many probes to the other planets and learned much, but the payoff for more has probably diminished, and NASA has too many desires between launch systems, ISS, going back to the moon, and deep space exploration. I would argue that going back to the moon is the only one that has national security value.

So you are all in favor of allowing China to assume the lead in space science? The cuts have nothing to do with “woke and waste”, but everything to do with the head of the OMB who arbitrarily made those cuts because he hates NASA.

NASA had nothing to do with the failure of Boeing’s’ capsule. It was all on Boeing.

Generally agree with you, but the “Mission to Planet Earth” crap that still eats up a large part of NASA’s budget needed to go for long time. Most other stuff...agree, should have been maintained.

Of course people like you will minimize all of this, as it would help China and Russia achieve space dominance, while relegating the US space program to pre-1961 levels. Or the dustbin of history if you prefer.

“NASA needs to get creative”

Such as ending DEI...but can they do that?

Exactly. And if they had demonstrated any capability to use the money that was allotted to them apart from climate change BS and Muslim outreach, their argument would be a better one.

Proof of NASA’s in aptitude and inability to effectively use the funds allotted to them as demonstrated in the idiotic Starliner capsule, which was too dangerous to bring back two astronauts that it was too dangerous to send up in that blasted thing.., but they sent them up anyway is proof enough that they can’t be trusted with spaceflight or taxpayer money.
