Allergies to Antibiotics: Looking for Advice
Vanity | 02/15/2025 | Me

Posted on 02/15/2025 1:34:47 PM PST by CheshireTheCat

I recently started taking a very common antibiotic, Amoxicillin, that years ago I had no issue with. I had a slightly itchy rash develop a couple hours later. A rash I can live with, but it can be the precursor to a more serious reaction.

I took Cipro years ago and was one of those people who have the rare reaction of it possibly causing abrupt Achilles tendon ruptures (I got aching precursors to this happening, but fortunately was at the end of course of it and didn't have a rupture).

I suspect I might have an issue with Zithro but don't know if what I experienced, electrical like feelings, was a reaction to it or a Covid thing.

Free Republic is full of smart people and people who have had experience with the same issues others have had.

I'm wondering if others here have had multiple reactions to multiple antibiotics and what you can share that can be helpful.

Thank you in advance.

I did not get the Covid vax, nor have had any other vaxxes going back several years.

I am allergic to latex, cheese (not dairy), beef, avocados, and have had a lot of reactions to prescription pain meds and the sulfur laurel whatever stuff they put in toothpaste to make it fizzy and glycerin. I'm fine with aspirin, Advil, and Tylenol and sinus medicines.

Doctors consider me to be histrionic when I mention these allergies. I'm considering going the concierge medicine route in the hopes I can find someone who will listen to me and find an allergist to work with, but each new doc seems to label me an antivaxxer nut job uneducated idiot, even though I have multiple degrees.

That’s too bad. I would have died of a sinus infection ears ago without amoxicillin.

My wife gets sinus infections about twice a year. Has had them for years.

I keep telling her to get a sinuplasty. She won’t do it. Her loss.

Azithromycin is a common alternative to Amoxicillin, what I was given for Strep when I couldn’t take Amox due to a conflict with another prescription. There are no doubt others. Get back with your doctor.

“but each new doc seems to label me an antivaxxer nut job uneducated idiot, even though I have multiple degrees.”

None of my several doctors have ever asked me about vaccinations.

What are you taking it for??

I took it for a sinus infection and had gastro problems. My doctor switched me to Keflex and it was wonderful....no problems.

Concierge medicine has fewer elitest snobs and also more quacks willing to tell you what you want to hear and take your money. So do your due diligence.

I myself have been happy with Nurse Practioners, lots less ego.

You are more likely to find a vax skeptical doc in the concierge world that’s for sure.

One key phrase clued me into what MIGHT be going on with you.

this is a long and complicated issue that many doctors don’t understand if they have even heard of it.

It took me decades to find out that I have genetic problems with drugs...and I found out by accident after I had my genetic test done with Nebula. I uploaded it to Genetic Genie. Saw the issue. Got it confirmed with an official genetic test.

The p450 issue is not the only issue. I have many genetics that cause a problem with different drugs...like Warfarin.

I suggest you look at this site to start to get an understanding:
https://medicine.iu.edu/internal-medicine/specialties/clinical-pharmacology/drug-interaction-flockhart-table

And btw, OTC meds like Quercetin can seriously have a bearing on prescription meds.

I suspect you have got a genetic problem .

one more thing, have you had an MRI with contrast recently?

IMHO:

You have a severely diseased gut setting you up for a precursor to something more serious. Worse, your gut issues may be causing a cavalcade of effects, all of which you may not be aware (including malnutrition).

I strongly suggest that you seek out a Naturopath - online or otherwise - with whom to consult (even IF it costs you a few hundred bucks) to guide you to request tests and proper action to get your gut on a healing track.

I predict that many of your allergies will abate over time, but the process you may soon engage takes some major dedication and will take 1-2 years.

There is NO PILL to solve this and I can’t paste the contents of my unpublished book here. Nor will orthodox medicine (your MD) be able to help (as I’m sure you’ve already experienced since you’re posting here).

Seriously: Best of luck. Ball’s in your court. The answer is out there; you just have to find the right ND to advise you (most of what it takes is entirely up to your actions).

2 pieces of corollary advice:

1. Begin writing a health journal NOW if you don’t already have one and start challenging your memory to regress it as far back as your memory permits, focusing on major health events and going from there. It’s easier than it sounds once you begin. A good ND will find your journal to be GOLDEN and it will serve to guide any advice efficiently,

2. Begin searching the internet for forums about gut issues and just start reading. FR is NOT the best forum to post such a request, but in present company it was probably the best place to start ;-) You have a LOT of self education to do and in that course you may find a forum which can help. But be forewarned: There are 100 million opinions on the gut out there (I truly wish I could advise you, but I am neither licensed nor in any position to share my unpublished books on gut health).

They go down the list while staring at the computer the whole time, typing in who knows what.

“Have you had your flu shot? Tetanus booster? Covid booster? Hepatitis vaccine? We recommend pneumonia for someone like you who has had pneumonia, etc. We have them here and give you all of them right now.” Or they can set me up with one of their “partners” to get one.

Mind you, the pneumonia was walking pneumonia when I was 16 and no bouts since.

Then they push for me to get HIV and hepatitis testing. Maybe they think I sleep around because I am unmarried.

For some reason, they dwell a lot on questions about illicit drug use. I don’t really think I look like a druggie. I have a respectable job. Maybe because I am thin and they don’t see many thin people over 30 anymore?

I don’t think I am too thin. I certainly have shape in the hips and bust.

I don’t have tattoos or any piercings but for one hole in each ear.

I looked up Zithro. substrate of P-glycoprotein (ABCB1) and MRP2 (ABCC2).

I have problems with both of those genes. I got an crazy electrified feeling all over my body that had me almost going to the hospital a few years ago because I thought I might have covid. I 100% believe it was due to a drug that is likely a substrate for ABCB1.

You will have to do some research to understand the significance of all of this.

I’m allergic to penicillin and erythromycin. Not too convenient when antibiotics are needed for something big, but there are alternatives enough for a doctor to prescribe. I have had good luck with sulfa drugs for ordinary issues.

My one and only MRI was of my toe and did not require contrast.

I have had a few CT scans with the dye, but it has been over 20 years now.

Some things are allergic reactions, others are just side effects. You have to rely on the doctors to evaluate that.

I’m sorry to hear of these problems, and your other sensitivities. I deal with enough of my own to really feel for you.

You are wise because even if it’s just a rash, it’s a sign of an allergic reaction that can be dangerous the next time.

Some people advocate for the heavy use of probiotics to fight infection. I have no idea about that. And there are supposed to be natural remedies that are anti-biotic in nature.

And the medical community has gone from beyond useless to outright destructive. There’s no excuse at all for their response to you.

I’ll pray for your healing.

These matters have been the topic of recent discussion, around here. Thank you. Thank you. All, is not lost!
