Trump’s Greenland Plans and Polar Bear Hunting

In his first term, and approaching his taking of office in his second term, President Trump spoke of the importance of Greenland to American security and the desirability of purchasing Greenland.

Historically, the United States of America has been interested in Greenland because of its strategic position. Attempts have been made to purchase the island. In WWII, the United States became the de facto protector of the island. The USA maintains a military base in Greenland.

It is uncertain if President Trump will acquire Greenland for the United States. This may be the opening gambit in a negotiation for more control over Greenland’s future.

What might it mean for hunters if Greenland became part of the United States polity?

People in Greenland have seals, Muskox, and polar bears to hunt. The most interesting thing would likely be polar bears. Greenlanders have hunted polar bears since the time there were people on Greenland. One researcher in Greenland assembled records of polar bear harvests from 1796 to 1998. The research was published in 2002. In essence, there was a rise in polar bear harvests from about 1900 to about 1930. In between the harvest dropped and rose. It is impossible to tell how much of the drop and rise happened because of the price of polar bear hides, polar bear populations, technological innovation to allow more access to polar environments, and war.

From about 1970 to 1998, the harvest averaged about 162 bears per year. This is a long, sustained harvest. It indicates more bears could be harvested without a negative effect on polar bear populations.

In 2005, significant restrictions were placed on the hunting of polar bears in Greenland. Only native Inuit who are full-time hunters are allowed to hunt polar bears. Hunters cannot use airplanes, snowmobiles, or boats over a certain

Polar Bears stock and kill humans. So do Black Bears. All other bear attacks on humans are incidental, they do not hunt human beings like Black Bear and Polar Bear.

Buy all means, push them back from any human settlement. Their tanned hides make excellent arctic blankets.

Send a tanned Polar Bear hide to PDJT as a gift to the 1st lady.He couldn’t bear it.

Unlike most meat eating animals, Humans taste good to polar bears—we are on the menu. Now they are mating with grizzlies and producing fierce hybrids. Good hunting!

Trump wants to start a new sport based in Greenland, “Arctic Golf”

He’s secretly hired Tiger Woods to design the course and plans to monopolize the. world’s supply of orange golfballs. The sport will introduce a new type of club, the ‘Howdy’ a combination driver and #8 bore double rifle to deal with the hazards.

Black bears are usually not a threat to humans. I’ve scared them off with noise. Browns are another issue.
They’re bad.

The more black bears become accustomed to humans, the less fear of humans they have.

Sometimes they kill and eat humans. It is at a rate about .2% the rate of brown/grizzly bears in the lower 48 states.

There may be the occasional black bear that would opportunistically stalk people, but it’s been my experience tthat hey run as soon as they encounter me.

They run away when they are not that hungry.

You must read this famous bear story of Freeper Kanawa, who was stalked and attacked by a black bear during a portage
in Northern Ontario.

Part of the danger of Black Bear is that ordinarily they seem innocuous. But that’s not true at all. They will stalk and kill a human being.

Tom Tilley ( Kanawa):( He used a Buck Knife, black handled fixed blade.)

There’s nothing green about Greenland. 80% of it is covered in ice. They should have named it Iceland, but that name was already taken.

Black bears are always hungry. I live in a bear-dense part of the country. Elk bowhunters using cow calls bring them in close, very often. They come in hungry, expecting to find elk calves. Yet there are no attacks. Grizzlies, on the other hand....
