“Or do I mean supersonic?”
Yes.
To: Mr. K
"it was hypersonic;...." Hypersonic is Mach 5+, at least 5300 fps, depending on the temp. There's not a factory cartridge made that's that fast.
To: Damifino
I was about to post the same thing. Velocity loss would be small at 130 yards. M193 (if that is what it was) and 16 inch bbl, 3,100 to 3200 fps.

Out of a 24” barrel.
Most AR’s are 16” or often less.

I wonder where the bullet landed or in what. Would be a great souvenir. I would think it would be evidence of some sort.

I don’t know much about guns really but taking over 1/3 of a second for that distance is slower than I would’ve thought.

I was at a pro 2A rally in Richmind. A young guy had a sign that said “Your freedom can only be achieved above 2750 fps”. I loved it.

"The flight time of the bullet was 0.34 of a second." These idiots have taken the MV of something in the neighborhood of a .22LR -- which, if you'll remember was the original guess -- and scaled it down to a 140 yard shot. Didn't even have the subject matter familiarity to know to adjust for velocity lost to aero drag.
In the real world, M855 5.56 NATO from a 14.5" bbl gets to 150 yards in less than 0.2 seconds, as little as 0.15 seconds, depending.
None of us knows what round or what rifle the shooter had, which is what we'd need to work it out to the hundredth of a second with reasonable accuracy, and I doubt the author does, but his numbers are so off the mark it obviously was just a silly guess.

FBI Special Agent in Charge said it was AR-style in 5.56

LoL. Well, Thats slow for 5.56, but its up there for .308
178 grains at 2700 ft/sec will achieve a lot of freedom too. :)

I’ve never been in combat or been shot at, except the first time I ever went paintballing and heard the sound of the paint pellets whizzing past my head before I ever knew I was a target and being shot at, I was a little shocked, and paint pellets are much slower than bullets. I suddenly became more appreciative that I never had to go to war. There’s something visceral and shocking about how instantaneous a bullet is.

For kicks, a 223/.556, 55 grain pill flight time greater than 0.30 seconds for 130-140 yards would have a muzzle velocity less than 2400 fps. That or perhaps the bullet that grazed President Trump didn't originate from the dead perp's rifle. But that would be crazy, right?
