Here are all the cases which have been documented where 10mm, .41 Magnum, .45 Super caliber handguns were fired in defense against bears. This grouping includes the three calibers to provide enough incidents to be illuminating. These cases do not include incidents where handguns were use with other lethal means, or a mix of handgun calibers were used. There are 7 incidents with a 10mm caliber handgun (1 black bear, 6 brown), 4 incidents with .41 Magnum revolvers (1 black, 3 brown), and 1 incident with a .45 super handgun (brown bear). All were successful. The incidents are listed by caliber, chronologically within caliber.
A problem bear was becoming much too familiar with people and property at the lodge on a lake. Several cabins had been broken into and ransacked for food on the other side of the lake. Professional guide Jake Jefferson had his 10mm built by his brother on a six inch longside 1911 frame, with an eight shot magazine.
He attempted to haze the bear away from the lodge, and fired six shots near the bear, which indifferently moved a little way away. It came back quickly and tore up a bunch of empty coolers.
Jake looked for another firearm, but did not find any close to hand.

Thanks. Interesting stories.
“I stuck the barrel up against its neck, and the 250 grain .338 did not make it out the other side of its neck.”
Incredibly frightening situations against formidable foe.
Yes, thanks for the work you do.
Some Canadian told me a semiautomatic shotgun with double ought can deflect a bear attack
I wish I hadn’t sold mine…
Lot’s of wasted warning shots... Do warning shots ever work? Sounds like it would have been better saving those rounds for the bear.
In the instances where warning shots were reported as being tried, in the 190 cases we have documented where pistols were fired in defense against bears, warning shots worked about 70% of the time.
Of 29 recorded instances, warning shots worked in 21 instances.
Having shot bears with double 00 buck, yes it well work.
But having shot bears with rifles, shotguns and different pistol calibers.
I have found solid projectiles work better.
Buckshot lack pentation past 15 yards.
Your obsession with killing bears seems to suggest a mental condition that needs professional help. If you’re that afraid of bear attacks then do us all a favor and just stay out of the woods.

You’re tempting me to go out and buy a 10mm ...
I have no trouble handling 1911 sized handguns. I’m not a fan of Glocks.
Suggestions are welcome.
Some of us enjoy the articles.
No one forcing any of it on you personally.
Bears are ubiquitous outside of urban areas in most of North America. I have lived in bear country all of my adult life and have survived black and brown bear charges while armed and unarmed. I appreciate Mr. Weingarten’s efforts to chronicle bear attacks and often gain valuable insight from his writings. If you can’t appreciate it, don’t read it.
The Springfield Armory XDM Elite and Smith & Wesson M&P 10mm pistols are both well-regarded and reasonably priced. Loaded with hard cast lead bullets in the 200 grain range that caliber is amassing a solid record of success in defensive bear shootings. Personally I would prefer a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range but those are expensive…
I sure as Hell wouldn’t want to meet any of you in the woods because you’d shoot someone with your eagerness to kill a bear.
Bears are not worth a daily article about shooting bears. That’s an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
If you don’t like my comments then don’t read them, right?
I am not eager to kill bears and you have no idea what you are talking about.
