Chikli posted a letter found in the British archives to coincide with Yom Hashoah. The confidential letter was sent to the British Prime Minister by the Foreign Office.

The letter said that al-Banna had sent secret messages to the Germans from his apartment in Cairo, which served as a front for a law office.

Al-Banna founded the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928 in order to re-establish the caliphate after the fall of the Ottoman empire. The organisation was inspired by Nazism and antisemitic tropes from the Prototocols of the Elders of Zion and Mein Kampf. It advocated violence and martyrdom in order to achieve its aims. From the 1930s, the Muslim Brotherhood incited against Jews and Copts in Egypt. The Brotherhood’s Gaza branch, Hamas, was founded in 1987.

There is a larger untold story here. Many years ago, as a boy, I read an account of the fighting in North Africa during WW II by a German historian. I recall a brief reference to the Muslim Brotherhood as spying for the Germans and planning a mass uprising in Cairo when Rommel’s forces got close to the city. As it was, the British stopped Rommel at El Alamein.

I thought it was pretty well understood that Nazi Germany and the Muslim Caliphate walked together arm in arm. The one thing they shared was their hatred of all things Jewish.

Weirdly, the Jewish Zionist paramilitary group Lehi, aka the Stern Gang, also attempted to make an alliance with the Nazis against the British who were capping Jewish immigration and in no hurry to permit an independent Jewish state..

As a boy, one Saturday morning I saw the film about Rommel, The Desert Fox, then read the biography of the same name by Desmond Young. After that, I read Paul Carell's Foxes of the Desert. I trust that in one of those books there was a brief reference to the Muslim Brotherhood as helping Rommel. It stuck in my mind because I had never heard of the group before then.

More information would not doubt be available in a major university library system.
