Vanity - Looking for help on fatal bear attacks in Japan on Hokkaido Island 2016-2017, 2021.

I am doing research on bear attacks. A significant number happen on the Island of Hokkaido in Japan. The number of fatal attacks varies, usually between 0-4 in the last few years. I have numbers for 2018, 2019, and 2020. I need them for 2016, 2017, and 2021. Japanese authorities started tracking bear attacks a number of years ago, so the data is there. Finding it is the problem.

Bear attacks in Japan are much better covered there than in the international press. Any help would be appreciated.

The information is for research showing a comparison of fatal bear attacks in different population over the six year period. Data has been found for Alaska, Canada, the lower 48 states, and Romania. Only three years data is needed to include Hokkaido, Japan.

I never even thought of bears on Hokie-Dokie. I’ve seen features about the monkeys that hang out around hot springs, and about the very non-Japanese-looking Ainu people.

Looks like the bears there are very large brown bears. I wouldn’t think they’d have any natural enemies; so maybe they need some good game management.
