Roger Kimball’s New Criterion editorial on “DEI’s dangerous lies” is titled “Gay science,” in honor of sacked Harvard president Claudine Gay. Roger’s editorial lacks only some accompanying reference to Nietzsche’s The Gay Science, which I actually read under the tutelage of my political philosophy teacher last year.
It was in The Gay Science that Nietzsche announced “God is dead.” I thought Roger’s editorial might have announced that Harvard is dead. In each case, the assertion is a slight exaggeration, but it makes a point.
The eminent historian Dominic Green makes the Harvard point in the Wall Street Journal column “No Task Force Can Save Harvard” (behind the Journal’s paywall). Here is the opening passage:
Harvard is the Boeing 737 MAX of higher education. A great American brand is squandering the public’s trust. Failures of quality control are damaging its market dominance. Like any corporation, Harvard is looking for new management and working to burnish its image. Unlike most corporations, Harvard has no idea what it is doing. Boeing still has engineers; Harvard has only professors. When the wheels came off at Chrysler in 1978, the company brought in Lee Iacocca. Harvard has brought in Derek Penslar.
Mr. Penslar is a professor of Jewish history. He calls Israel a “settler colonial” state and compares the Jewish state’s establishment to France’s colonial takeover of Algeria. In August he signed an academic petition called “The Elephant in the Room.” It endorsed the conspiracy theory that the Netanyahu government’s proposals for judicial reform mask a plan to “ethnically cleanse all territories under Israeli rule of their Palestinian population.” It asserted that Israel imposes a “regime of apartheid” on Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza and accused the country of “Jewish supremacism.”

Stanford used to be the best college on the west coast.
Graduate from it in high tech and would eventually be a CEO.
It is now just a shadow of what it once was.
30 years of DIE killed it.
I don’t think ‘Harvard’ really cares. They (those who run it) have a $50 billion dollar plus endowment portfolio.
Thank you!
That $50 billion makes a nice target for students who have been damaged by Harvards negligence
Glad I got to see it. I guess we’ll be seeing a lot fewer of those “I Go To Harvard” sweat shirts.
VERITAS!
If someone challenges us as being homophobic we can just say "Oh, we aren't referring to people with homosexual orientation, we are referring to that phony who ran Harvard."
Excllent!, ... Couldn't happen to a more deserving skewl.
(Tip o' the hat to Rush)
You could also reply, “Calling me homophobic is so gay!”
Stanford had proudly kicked ROTC off their campus and denied government organizations such as the CIA the ability to recruit on campus while both were still happening at Berkeley, the supposedly more liberal institution.
lol. Perfect.
The military sucks the big one today but I wouldnt trade any part of my career for 2 or 3 Harvard degrees on anything. I felt that way when I was 16 (and was right) and my dad signed to get me in, and I feel just as strongly about it today(when I have been proven right beyond the shadow of any doubt.)
Once the Ivy League universities became woke, the ‘ivy’ went limp and dead.
But, woke policies and DEI and CRT also took over all other education systems, education became secondary and the country has gone to hell.
But, it all started when the teachers’ unions took over the education systems. It got many times worse when the teachers’ unions came under the control of the democratic party. The progressives in the democrat party have always had the goal of complete control of the population and industry. To achieve their goals, they had to take over the minds of the people starting with early education, which in reality is indoctrination. Indoctrination is the death-knell of the country, and death of the American system of government has been to dream of progressives and liberals and communists.
To recover from what the democrat party has done to the country may take decades, but, perhaps the country is done for.
Yep, that is how colloquialisms come to be.
It will replace: "There's something Queer about that incident".
Permission to laugh granted!
I’ll just concentrate on the picture.
Palestinian is not a race or a culture.
They are a political cult, by definition.
a large Jim Jones type cult as it were.
those people must be mostly sick as knowledgeable people know that masks don’t stop a virus. They may reduce the fluids from coughing or a sneeze.
I have a STEM degree from a private university and I know exactly how much value that degree had. As I worked full time before, during, and after I got my degree, at the same company. My nsalary grew to reflec my education. But I would not waste my time on a non-STEM degree from any university. Degrees from Ivy league schools are like Gucci, Rolex, and Prada all non-value added frilly status symbols. That cost too much.
I’m not sure if it was intentional or not, but Johnson’s use of the titles of Mr. and Ms. for the Harvard presidents certainly is appropriate. Addressing someone with a PhD as Dr. is appropriate ONLY for those that have actually earned the honor. Getting a PhD from Harvard or other buildings (NOT institutions) infused with steaming piles of ESG and DIE, is no indication whatsoever that the holder of such a piece of paper is worthy of the title.
Quite so. The operatives of the ruling class by now are supremely indifferent and above accountability. Beyond their prodigious wealth and power is the assurance of total protection from the masses.
I have an undergrad degree from MIT and a STEM PhD from Harvard. These degrees were obtained years before the leftist takeover of leading US institutions.
STEM PhDs are worth a lot, because they are awarded for original laboratory research, and typically result in peer-reviewed publications in leading scientific journals.
Some humanities and a few (economics, some anthropology) social science PhDs are also worth a lot. “Ethnic studies” degrees are at best worthless, and in some cases are pure poison!
Most Harvard (and MIT, etc.) alums got their degrees years before the far-left takeover of these institutions. We yearn for the renewal of the excellence of our alma maters!
And we cannot understand how antisemitism became so strong at leading universities, when it seemed back then that many Jews were in charge! Putting an anti-israel Jew like Penslar at the head of the “antisemitism committee” also is something that is hard to understand.
Lord have Mercy!
