King Abdullah: 'No Refugees in Jordan, No Refugees in Egypt'

As the Israel–Hamas war rages on, Jordan’s King Abdullah isn’t throwing out the welcome mat to refugees uprooted by the crisis, and neither is Gaza's neighbor, Egypt. In fact, Abdullah said, no refugees allowed:

Jordan's King Abdullah on Tuesday warned against trying to push Palestinian refugees into Egypt or Jordan, adding that the humanitarian situation must to be [sic] dealt with inside Gaza and the West Bank.

"That is a red line, because I think that is the plan by certain of the usual suspects to try and create de facto issues on the ground. No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt," King Abdullah said at a news conference following a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

Egypt and Jordan announce “no refugees” for them before Joe Biden even lands.

Another diplomatic disaster. https://t.co/NwyIa8wLE5— Richard Grenell (@RichardGrenell) October 18, 2023

The U.N. estimates that there are already north of one million people who have been displaced in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war.

Egypt, meanwhile, expressed a similar sentiment and claimed that they were already overwhelmed with millions of refugees from around the world.

Egypt does not see why it should squarely shoulder the responsibility of taking in refugees coming from the besieged Gaza Strip, said Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry.

“I see no reason why Egypt, which is hosting 9 million refugees — hosting them and providing them integration into our society at considerable burden on our economy — should have to bear solely [the] additional influx of Gazans,” Shoukry told CNBC’s Dan Murphy late Tuesday.

The International Organization for Migration agency in August 2022 assessed that there were 9 million refugees hailing from 133 countries in Egypt at that time.

Gaza is hemmed in on one side by the Mediterranean Sea and is bordered by Israel and Egypt. Since Hamas is at war with Israel, the only way out of the territory is via a single crossing at the Egyptian border:

The Rafah crossing, which is located on the Gaza-Egypt border, is the sole passage point between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. Egypt tightly restricts the Rafah crossing and has been recently reluctant to open it for the movement of people, unless Israel allows humanitarian aid to enter the territory.

To most of the more than 2 million Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip enclave, the Rafah crossing represents the only potential exit, as Egypt says Israel continues with aerial bombardment. Israel has said it exclusively targets the strategic positions of Hamas, following the Palestinian militant group’s multi-pronged terror attacks of Oct. 7.

Florida Governor and GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis noted the irony of how so many Middle Eastern countries profess affinity with the Palestinians but often seem unwilling to help out. He also pointed out that it's actually a pretty good idea to protect the sanctity of your nation's borders:

Nobody in that region wants importation of the Palestinians.
Apparently they are so fanatical, they even give terrorists a bad name!

When even muslims don’t want other muslims, you KNOW there’s a problem with the Palestinians.

Some of the blase reactions I’m seeing to the Arab countries rejecting this proposal are perplexing. Why are other countries obligated to take people being ejected from what has been their home (and, in the case of a majority of Palestinian children, has been under blockade for their entire lives)?

“Palestinians are nothing but trouble, no wonder Egypt and Jordan won’t take them.”

Or, alternatively:

- Egypt won’t take them because they would be destitute (since, even though the Palestinians aren’t what anyone would call “well off”, what little they own is in Gaza). 2 million people wallowing in a massive refugee camp in the Sinai would be a goldmine for the Muslim Brotherhood (especially when Egypt has a neighbor — Sudan — just to its south undergoing a civil war).

- Jordan won’t take them because they already have tensions boiling over from refugees displaced because of the Syrian Civil War, as well as Iranian-backed militias agitating Jordan’s security via smuggling and drug running.

For either nation, being told to they have to accept 2 million Palestinians — refugees who will be feeling very bitter about being kicked out of their homes — would be seen as an existential threat to their national security...and rightly so.

Both Egypt and Jordan have couched their refusal to accept Palestinian refugees in humanitarian terms; however, the brutal calculus is that the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza will inflame the various tensions that already exist, running the risk of escalating the conflict into a true regional war throughout the Middle East.

They have been unable to peacefully co-exist with anyone.

Six words that are actually true.

Guess that means Israel should play catcher for another 50yrs and we’ll call that civilized.

Maybe Netanyahu shouldn’t have supported Hamas to serve as a counter to Fatah and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank then.

But I digress: do you seriously think defeating Hamas requires Israel to evict the Palestinians from Gaza?

As far as Jordan goes, two words: Black September.

Egypt has had a relatively small (by comparisons to Gaza) Palestinian diaspora since 1948. However, given that Hamas originally split off from the Muslim Brotherhood (from what I recall), I can understand why they’re wary of taking more when Egypt already is playing host to millions of refugees from various other conflicts.

Jordan for sure. It wasn’t pretty at all.

Fun fact: The GDP per person in Gaza is roughly 1.5x that in India.

Thank God a similar proportion of India’s population are not homocidal maniacs.

Maybe it would help to get Gazans hooked on a more “pacifying” drug than captalon.

No one wants their cities worm-holed with miles of underground tunnels. Those Gazans don’t know when to stop. Building will topple with their foundations compromised. I know that’s being sarcastic but these countries know these Gazans know how to make trouble. Their background check has some real bad history.

They’re going to be so bitter being evicted from their open air prison.

We have all of those words w/o the word Iran one time.

At what point does the west stop playing catcher in the 50yr proxy war?

Hijackings, USS Cole, Beirut marine barracks, WTC I & II, embassies, discos, cafes, subways etc....but I’m going to believe Bibi’s got this and that’s all folks!

PS the Arafat billions are still most likely in French banks-perhaps that will help with the move.

Egypt is getting abt $4.5 billion/yr in US aid + excess climate scam oil revenue-that buys a lot of hummus.

Iran is 20% more oil production, 500% increase nat gas output into climatescam prices with $26 billion in released walking around money.

Jordan is near economic collapse anyway-pals or not.
