‘There [are] great books,’ Peterson said. ‘Read them. Ignore your professors’
“How do you have the adventure of your life?” Canadian psychologist and professor emeritus Jordan Peterson said Wednesday evening in a keynote address at New York’s Plaza Hotel.
“Tell the truth,” Peterson said.
“And then…it’s so bloody interesting and engaging and exciting that it justifies the misery of your existence,” he stated.
“What I can tell you: there’s great books,” Peterson said. “Read them. Ignore your professors.”
Peterson delivered remarks to approximately 350 people at the seventh annual “Disinvitation Dinner” hosted by the Buckley Institute of Yale University.
The Institute aims to “foster robust and open debate, provide a home for enlightened conservative thought and expose students to often-unvoiced views,” according to its website.

Would love to see his recommendations on which books to add to my list.
Peterson’s great, but he goes way too heavy on Russian and German literature. He seeks out the most depressing stuff he can find. He would do well to throw in some Chesterton and even Dickens to mix things up a bit. Also, while he is a brilliant man and asking the right questions, he still reminds me of the “intellectual” Christians of the ‘60s, which his admiration of Carl Rogers, heavy Jungianism, evolutionism influencing his approach to religion and “myth”, rather than the other way around.
On the other hand, Peterson himself would be first to say that his list is not authoritative.

Peterson is a flawed individual, as are we all. But, he has popularized critical thinking and interest in the classic writers and intellectuals more than anyone in a generation. Even though I sometimes disagree with his analysis and conclusions, I never listen to him without being challenged to really think deeply about an issue.

I just started reading J Peterson and it’s some pretty cool stuff. I never knew about him.
It’s always a positive thing when eggheads can represent the Right as ably as this guy. (I haven’t been reading him long enough to know what his mistakes are. That’s going to take a while.)
Jordan Peterson is a traditional liberal. even a 19th century liberal.
I’m not liberal anymore. I’ve turned very conservative.
But Peterson is the great liberal professor that I never had in college.
Even in the 80’s when I was in school at columbia—the profs were frankfurt school communists. it was part of the air people breathed.
these days they’ve all become premodern pagans.
