Smoking Cannabis May Not Be as Harmless as You Think. Here's Why.

Though tobacco use is declining among adults in the US, cannabis use is increasing. Laws and policies regulating the use of tobacco and cannabis are also moving in different directions.

Tobacco policies are becoming more restrictive, with bans on smoking in public places and limits on sales, such as statewide bans on flavored products. In contrast, more states are legalizing cannabis for medical or recreational use, and there are efforts to allow exceptions for cannabis in smoke-free laws.

These changes mean an increasing number of people are likely to get exposed to cannabis smoke. But how safe is direct and secondhand cannabis smoke?

I am a primary care doctor and researcher in a state where cannabis is now legal for medical and recreational use. My colleagues and I were interested in how opinions about tobacco and cannabis smoke safety have been changing during this time of growing cannabis use and marketing.

It’s horrible for developing brains.

And developed brains. At least cigarettes don't damage the nervous system.

Smoking cigarettes won’t hurt you if done in moderation. Smoking one or two or three or four cigarettes a day won’t do a damn thing to a healthy person. Abusing the sweet living shit out of them will do a myriad of nasty things. Weed may be much the same. What would a joint every once in a while do to a healthy person?

The deep state wanted to make it readily available to control a large segment of the population. Stoned people are easier to control.

Well of course. The term “dope” is associated with marijuana. Dope is also a slang term for idiot (more recently also cool or chill or good). Not a coincidence. Anyone who knows or has met someone who smokes weed regularly knows their mental faculties decline.

Now to be blunt I’m all for marijuana for medicinal purposes, for example to help cancer patients under extreme chemo to be able to eat aka the munchies. It works. The THC pills do not work near as well. This is coming from a friend who has seen several cancer patients go through it (and lost one - she lost the battle).

That said, all criminalizing weed for recreational use does is increase the price and make the crooks more money. Didn’t we learn anything from prohibition?

I didn’t word one part correctly. I meant, “This coming from a friend of several cancer patients...”!

One more thing: I do NOT partake. First, I make my living using my mental faculties. Second, I’m highly allergenic to pot. Near instant migraine.

Back in college, I’d leave any party immediately when smelled pot. Usually went back to my dorm or apartment because knew if I could smell it, a migraine was coming quickly and I needed to be in a dark quite place (yeah my dorm was actually quite - it was the Honors dorm - parties happened in other dorms). Word got around and my friends were careful to warn me if someone was going to light up.

PS Migraines suck. If you’ve never had one, consider yourself lucky. Only thing that can give me a worse migraine is MSG.

“I never thought long-term sustained usage was harmless.”

Look at how they vote. Their brains never mature during adulthood.

I still remember my first migraine headache.
I was working for an ambulance company, it was on my days off and I’d gone fishing.
I had a hard time focusing on the fish I was filleting, and when I got done I got so nauseated I went into the BR, and that’s when the twinkling lights started.
I thought I’d eat some dry toast to help with the nausea and turned off the lights because they hurt my eyes.
I was sitting in the front room of the apartment and I could hear the bread cooking in the toaster.
Then that little guy with the giant hammer showed up inside my head.
I went numb on the right side of my body and thought I was having a stroke at 23yo.
Migraine headache is no joke, if you haven’t had one, good for you, you don’t want that in your head at all.

My first migraine was horrific. I eventually started throwing up from the pain and couldn’t stop. I was soon vomiting blood. I went to the ER and they knocked me out.

For decades I wouldn’t leave the house without a bottle of painkillers that would knock out a horse.

Yup. Especially this part: “I got so nauseated I went into the BR, and that’s when the twinkling lights started.” Then the pounding starts. That’s a migraine. Light hurts. Any little sound hurts. Heck even the sheets on your bed hurt where they touch your skin.

Haven’t had one for a while once I clued on that MSG gave me one. MSG was in a brand of Ramen noodles that used to be a quick lunch staple.

I find it funny when some people talk about pain from little things like a broken finger (played football - broken a few bones) or a paper cut. On a scale of 1 (minor) to 10 (migraine), a lot of things people whine about scores at most a 2.

Do admit one thing matched it: had an accident where I ended up with 14 fractures. Major surgery to fix. Was prescribed oxycodone as pain management. I took the bare minimum necessary while complying with doctor’s orders. Never understood why people would take that stuff for recreation. Hated how it fuzzed me up. But after they put a hardware store (screws and plates after filleting you) into your bones, well let’s just say that hurts a little.

Pot smokers vote Democrat by a large margin over cigarette smokers.

Did you ever find the trigger of your migraines? For some people there isn’t one. For some people there is.

What worked for me was to strip down my diet to the absolute necessities. No migraines. Added foods one at a time. No migraines until ate the Ramwn noodles. Looked closely at the ingredients. MSG listed. My Mom had an MSG sensitivity. Pieces fell in place. Since I started avoiding all MSG (read all ingredient labels carefully), no migraines. Been about 1 1/2 years.

If you haven’t tried this approach, maybe give it a go?

PS Did not mean to derail this thread. Just trying to help a fellow Freeper. Back to constant use of marijuana makes you dumb aka a dope?

Seems logical that if you inhale smoke and hold it in your lungs for effect, that it is not healthy.

But we knew that already.

Never thought of that. Hmmm. You are correct.

How about menthol cigarette smokers?

Except that people are not trying to deny that coffee and white bread are harmless and even making the claim that they are actually healthy. So drink up and get yourself 20 loves of wonder bread.
