Hey they looked like coyotes even before I skinned them. Now go away, my dad is the "big guy".

Why would someone’s pets be wandering where they could be killed?

From article:

Police said in an arrest warrant affidavit that Michael killed the dogs with a crossbow on Nov. 18, 2022, after the dogs, both 10 years old, escaped from a family’s yard.

10 years old is almost elderly for a GSD.

I know it was a crossbow but I seem to recall my riflery coach telling me something about knowing what the fcuk you’re shooting at before you pull the trigger.

This dumbass does not deserve the title of “Hunter”

Crossbow makes his cases even more dubious. He would have to be close to his target. He certainly gives a bad name to a hunter.

“facing criminal charges in Connecticut”

CHARGES in Connecticut

“pet German shepherds owned by a family in Danbury, Connecticut.”

OWNED BY a family in Danbury, Connecticut.”

A short drive from Delaware.

Don’t tell me that “in the article it says” because, as we all know, nobody reads the articles. /s

Oh, by the way, we ALL realize that it was not actually Hunter Biden.

“A” Hunter

It’s called “HUMOR”.

My FIRST thought was “Hunter Biden” Because it said “Hunter” not “A hunter” in the headline.

Properly tuned, with the minimum legal of 125 pound draw weight, I’d wager 100 plus yards was doable. Still...idiot.

NE farmers paint the word COW on both sides of their cows with international orange paint, reducing the accidental killing of their livestock. This is not a new phenomenon.

Savvy hikers stay out of hunting areas during those seasons too.

Reminds of an incident in a novel (A. B. Guthrie?) where a trapper is catching wolves. When he finds one in a trap, he clubs it to death, takes the trap off, and skins it. He’s going to the next trap, when the wolf from the last trap is walking up to him and growling, and skinned. He only stunned it. He shoots it but is so unnerved, he stops trapping. I have tried to imagine how that skinned wolf looked, standing there and growling. It still creeps me out.

You ASSUME 1) all coyotes look like what is in your photo and 2) they invariably will oblige you by standing still and posing so you can make a positive identification.

Neither is the case.

Particularly in the case of the eastern coyote*, there are literally dozens of phenotypes, few of which could pass for a western coyote. Just last week a blonde coyote passed through my back yard, which was a conformation I never had seen before in the wild (and if he'd taken another 20 seconds to cross my land, I'd have had my first blonde pelt).

However, they still 'look' different from dogs because their gait, their posture, and their overall behavior is different from a domestic canine. But those differences can be subtle, won't show up in any photo, and aren't obvious if you haven't seen enough of them in the flesh to learn the difference.

* DNA testing has shown that the eastern coyote is 10-12% wolf (roughly equal parts red and gray), 10-12% domestic canine, and the rest is western coyote. But they are larger, cagier, more adaptable, potentially more vicious, and come in far more sizes, shapes and colors than their western cousins for the simple reason that as a "breed" they are relatively young, barely a century. So in a very real sense they are still evolving, still changing in appearance.

We live deep in the woods in CT—so we see a lot of hunters in the area.

They are not very impressive—a lot of weekend warriors.

Multiple shots in the woods are the clue they are not hitting what they are aiming at—and the heavily wooded areas are perfect for ricochets.

The crossbow hunters are usually more skilled.
