The One Weird Trick Hollywood Doesn't Want to Know About
The Continental Congress ^ | 1 Mar 2023 | George MF Washington

A few weeks ago a little-noticed football-themed movie called 80 FOR BRADY rode Super Bowl mania to something like a $13 million opening weekend. Not a ton of money in the grand scheme of things, but then Hollywood is struggling these days, struggling so badly that even Marvel, DC and Star Wars movies seem to be underperforming. There is a panic settling into Studio commisaries throughout greater Los Angeles. Every smart person in Hollywood, and even some of the dumb ones, are trying to figure out how to get people back into movie theaters after what turns out to have been a wholly unnecessary shutdown over a virus of middling lethality. And so it should be no surprise that a $13 million opening made an enormous splash in executive hallways across Hollywood.

Such a splash did this little movie make that a week later I heard a colleague say that there is a new “mandate” across the industry to find more content for what Hollywood now sees as an “under-served market.” That’s right folks, the word has gone out… we need more movies for old white ladies. Now look, I’m not knocking that, everyone deserves to have a good movie to go see on Friday nights, even old white ladies. What I am knocking is the fact that Hollywood, once again, seems to be missing the forest for the trees.

...

I think about this meme every time someone in Hollywood begins waxing poetic about “under-served” markets… except in my version it goes something like this: “Hollywood will literally do anything to make money except create content for Red State audiences.”

Apparently they didn't notice Top Gun: Maverick making one billion dollars either.

In an industry where imitation truly is the highest form of flattery, and where different studios sometimes make and release the same content at the same time to capitalize on an idea that’s popular in the zeitgeist (i.e. 18 AGAIN versus VICE VERSA or DEEP IMPACT vs ARMAGEDDON or GAME OF THRONES versus RINGS OF POWER versus WHEEL OF TIME), where stealing has becomes so de rigueur that it has its own euphemism… “homage”, there still remains one kind of success that Hollywood absolutely refuses to imitate…

Movies and TV shows that are popular with Conservatives.

Maybe the fans want more Amber Heard. No, that’s not it. They’d rather have Johnny Depp back and see how he wrangles 300 million alpacas all by himself.

My wife her girlfriends went to see 80. They often go to movies. There is a market for senior white women. I don’t know how big it is.

I don’t know how much money Gutfeld generates for Fox, but I do know that The Daily Wire recently offered Conservative podcaster Steven Crowder $50 million to move his show to their site. Fifty million dollars! And on top of that, DW’s frontman Ben Shapiro recently announced that he’s pouring $100 milion into children’s programming.

I gave up comic books when I was 10. I sure as hell am not going to pay to see them in a theater now.

“Little old white ladies” aren’t going to go to the theaters either for fear of being mugged and assaulted by “BLM” members.

Hollyweird is trying to define "underserved markets" by their definitions of people based on age and race and such.

They instead should ask what the non-hyphenated Americans are wanting.

They need to make a movie about a humble tireless senator who has been in office since before half the country was alive.
His only desire is to make America great by bringing unity and transparency to Washington,DC and America.
God bless you,sir.
And his dear son who makes every effort to bring China closer to becoming a democracy.
And let’s not forget the black women who worked her way up from a field slave to become the first black women to giggle her way to becoming VP.

They did not notice the difference between the take between Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Lightyear either.

TLW was not great (and I blame it for making our youngest want a puppy) but it was a good serviceable movie for children.

People just want to go to the movies and watch a story. If they want to be preached at they will find a church or turn on CNN.

There are a lot of movie theaters where that is in no way a problem.

But when there is nothing to watch you don't go.

“I gave up comic books when I was 10. I sure as hell am not going to pay to see them in a theater now.”

I was watching a Transformer movie one time and had an epiphany that just ruined it and all the super hero movies for me; they’re all just computer generated cartoons. And seeing the “how they did that” videos showing an actor acting like an idiot in front of a green screen just put it over the top.

Or getting shot by Alec Baldwin.

There is a particular movie genre (hard porn) that will explain the real dynamic behind dwindling theater audiences - and it’s not Covid shutdowns.

Basically, who in their right mind would watch porn in a theater if they could watch it at home? The answer is nobody. That’s why porn theaters disappeared over night about 40 years ago.

Eventually that will happen to all theaters.

What is really happening is that the home theater experience has risen to a quality level that makes it almost silly to go to a theater, where you have to pay more and endure the unwashed masses.

They can delay that realization for a time by preventing cable providers from showing the movie, to attract the people who just must see the movie right now.

But basically movie theaters will disappear just as millions of portrait painters and illustrators lost their careers with the advent of the camera, and checkered cabs disappeared with the advent of Uber.

Obviously there aren’t enough trannies, homos, and fat black superheroes in today’s movies. Everyone everywhere wants all gay all the time with tranny characters in every roll. We also need more and more leftism, anti-man jokes, and anti-white racism.

Never mind two of the highest grossing movies in the past 20 years avoided politics.
