Virginia boy, 12, choked by older girl on bus as school refuses to ban bully

Taylor Brock, Virginia mom, 12 year old son choked by older girl on school bus as administrators refuse to ban bully who is issued order of protection to keep away from boy in latest case of school bullying. Why does it keep happening? A Virginia mother has demanded school authorities take action against an older girl caught on surveillance video choking and bullying her 12 year old son during a recent attack on a school bus.

Taylor Brock, whose son is a seventh-grader at Walt Whitman Middle School in Alexandria, posted footage from the Jan. 23 incident on her blog Monday in which she calls out the older child’s behavior.

A one-minute clip shows the girl hitting her son, grabbing him by the mouth and neck, threatening him, and then apparently choking him while pushing him into the seat.

The driver is only heard warning students not to switch seats.

The incident according to the mom led to her son being left with red marks and bruises and now fearing riding the school bus.

...

My son came home crying, and I saw the marks on his neck,’ Brock told WUSA 9. ‘It breaks my heart that there are all these kids on the bus and not one decided to stand up.’

The mom wrote that the attacker was the same girl who had stolen a toy from her son months ago.

‘I immediately went to the school to show them the video of the assault and pictures of my son’s neck. Upon seeing this I was sure that the school would take proper action and keep not only my son safe but the other children on the bus and school safe too by expelling her,’ Brock wrote.

‘Surely, a child seen committing a heinous crime would get expelled from school,’ the mom added.

Brock told WJLA that she also filed a complaint with police.

‘The school said they couldn’t tell me what action would be taken against the girl but that they would take care of it,’ she told the outlet, adding that she obtained a protection order from a Fairfax County judge who ordered the girl to stay at least 50 feet away from her son for two years.

‘I found out from my son that she had come back to school after being merely suspended for a criminal act such as strangulation. How is that fair?’ Brock wrote.

...

The mom said the school assured her that her son and his assailant would not have the same classes and that the principal told the two children to walk apart in the hallways, WUSA reported.

But Brock said her son told her the girl sat behind him at lunch and crossed paths with him in the hallways.

‘Not only did the girl not take this protection order seriously, but the school didn’t either,’ Brock wrote.

She said that when she asked school officials why they merely suspended the girl, ‘they replied, ‘We have protocols we have to follow and execute punishment according to the School’s Code of Conduct.’’

‘From what I have been told, she is known for bullying but mostly bullies my son. He is an easy target as he is one of the shortest and skinniest children in his grade which was true for me growing up as well,’ Broke wrote in her blog.

‘This child committed a felony under adult standards and suspension was the ‘correct form of discipline?’’ she added.

...

According to guidance by the Virginia Department of Education, schools are not legally responsible for enforcing a court order, but safety should still be a priority and a school can determine steps if an order is violated.

A Fairfax County Public Schools rep told WUSA in a statement: ‘The school administration handled the situation in line with the student discipline manual (FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities). We are unable to share further information due to federal privacy laws.’

Brock told WUSA she plans on moving her son to another school and he has sought therapy.

‘Do you know how many parents have come to me telling me their child were bullied, harassed, sexually assaulted, abused, and harmed at school and how they repeatedly go to the school asking them to do something and the school does nothing?’ the mom wrote.

‘These parents ask me what they need to do to get the schools to take action- and I have to say, ‘I don’t know. The school has video of a crime and a protection order and they still only believed that suspension was enough to keep my child safe,’ she added.

The incident comes after after a number of national bullying episodes being caught on video, including a 15 year old boy and another boy beating a 9 year old Florida girl on a school bus along with video of a 14-year-old New Jersey girl, Adriana Kuch, being mercilessly set upon by four girls in a school hallway, only for the girl to take her own life two days later after video of the assault began circulating social media.

> Just curious - what kind of school? <

Oh, sorry. I should have been more descriptive there. I taught in an urban (big city) public school district, high schools only. As I gained seniority, I was able to bid on better teaching positions. So I was in three different schools total.

Two were majority black. The other one was somewhat racially balanced. All of the students were poor. Student behavior and attendance was a serious problem.

But here’s the thing. The honors kids (black and white) were great, as good as any students at a fancy suburban school. So of course my district is shutting down the honors classes - those classes just don’t have the proper demographic mix.

As I noted earlier, urban schools are hopeless.

Fighting back a bully isn't always like what you see in movies like "Back To The Future" where the bullied boy finally smashes the bully in the face, winning respect from his peers and getting the girl. It makes for a nice feel-good story but doesn't necessarily work that way in real life.

In today's world, the bullies are likely gang members and fighting one of them back will result in bringing the wrath of the entire gang upon you and your family. Friends will disappear into the woodwork as they will not want to get involved in sticking up for you, therefore getting the gang after them as well.

That is not blaming the victim. That happened in post three.

This is blaming the victim's mother for something she has total control over.

She can at any time remove the child from that situation as any number of parents have done.

She is preferring to rely on the system. Which in my opinion is stupid.

There was another mother that did that and her son ending up carrying a knife for self defense which resulted in his being arrested.

Do not put your children in impossible situations.

You will not like the solutions they come up with.

I’m afraid that experience and others permanently soured me on blacks, teachers, and most cops.

Amish gal who outweighs the boy 2:1. Although in the 60s I was taught it was worth losing if you drew enough blood first.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Every last thing you said in your post is true. (And see the end of my post #32).

And as I noted in an earlier post, I had a student in my class who had murdered someone, and was out on bail. A bully like that won’t be deterred by a punch in the nose.

It sickening, but sometimes a bullied kid just has to get out of that school. There is no better option. Heck, even Lee retreated after Gettysburg.

That precious little annoying girl of color looks like a 20 year old. And of course she is protected. Blacks committing felonious assault against small white victims is encouraged and supported.

I'm not a teacher, but Its my pet peeve as well, as I watch developments, and attend school meetings regularly here in NY State. In the black/poor areas, they destroy the honors programs, which is at least a model for the all students and refuge for a few. And after that is destroyed, will try to restart one at a charter school.

My own kids' school, which is 96% white / Asian higher incomes and fewer discipline problems and strong parental input - even there, advanced programs are under assault around the edges from LAZY, STUPID and IDEOLOGICAL union/karen administrators who have wormed their way into positions of power. Another peeve is that most of these suburban parents are worried more about SPORTS, while my allies on the advanced programs are invariably the Chinese/Korean/Indian parents.

I had this experience in my urban high school - back in the 1970s.

The bully I stood up to made my life a living hell for the rest of my time there. He and his friends would stalk me everywhere, looking for an opportunity to beat me senseless, forcing me to always watch my back and sneak down back alleys to avoid the main streets. One night, they came by my house and smashed almost every window on the first floor with cinder blocks and baseball bats. My parents had to pay the costs for that.

I ended up joining the Marines after high school in large part just to get away from that neighborhood and those kids.

Also, and here is the kicker, I was the one suspended from school for fighting. Never had a discipline issue in my entire school life up to that point. The administrators didn't care. Rules are rules, was their reply. The bully was considered the victim because I threw the first punch. And the bully was careful to get his revenge outside of school grounds.

Urban schools were and are hellholes. Likely even worse today than back when I went. Raising my children in a mostly white affluent suburb was probably the best thing I ever did for them.

Black and female? certain enough social justice points to get away with beating up a white boy. If she were also a butch lesbian, she could probably get away with assassinating a U.S. Congressman.

This is Assault. Report it as an assault of a minor to the local police and send a copy to the school and the bus company.

Be litigious and sue them and Bully parents for damages.

Why does it keep happening?

Because fathers won't peel themselves from the TV sets long enough to do anything about it.

Because men think the services of prostitutes are more important than the rights of their sons. Need proof? Men spend billions a year on prostitutes in this country alone. How much do they spend on supporting MRAs?

And because self righteous men are more concerned about teaching their sons not to hit girls than in demanding equal justice for their sons.

So men, what are YOU going to do about it?

The assailant should be charged under the juvenile code and expelled.

I certainly agree. But I must mention something. As I noted earlier, I taught at an urban high school. It had all the expected problems: poor student attendance, fights in the hallways, kids running wild in the classrooms, etc.

Ah, but then by some miracle we got a tough principal, an ex-army paratrooper. He turned that place around. He walked the halls constantly. He suspended bullies and troublemakers. And he called the city police. Those were golden years.

He committed lots of no-no’s there. You’re not supposed to suspend disruptive students. High suspension rates make the district look bad! And you’re not supposed to call the city police. You’re supposed to call the school police (better to bury the incident).

The central administrators hated the guy, and told him so. But they couldn’t fire him because he had the strong support of a school board member. Finally he retired. And then it was back to the chaos.

Sounds like the principal you speak of took the Rudy Giuliani approach. Good for him. Wish there were more like him.
