GLENDALE, AZ — After an exciting, hard-fought, back-and-forth gridiron battle between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, the NFL proudly announced that the referees had been named MVP of the Super Bowl LVII.
"This continues a longstanding tradition in our league," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell when presenting the award. "The officiating crew truly embodies what our game is all about. The referees made an impact that determined the outcome of this great game, and now they take their rightful place in the spotlight."
Fans and media alike were quick to decry the officiating of the game, believing bad calls were directly responsible for giving the victory to Kansas City. "Are you kiddin' me?!" shouted Eagles fan Jono Hughes after the game. "You're gonna call a holding penalty at that point in the game?! I had 200 bucks and ownership of my youngest kid riding on that game! Thanks a lot, refs! Jerks!"
Rumors were circulating that the officials had a vested interest in making sure the Chiefs came out on top. "It's ridiculous to insinuate that we were in any way impartial," said Head Referee Carl Cheffers after the game while wearing an autographed Patrick Mahomes jersey. "We take great pride in calling the game fairly and ensuring the right team wins. I can show you the script for the game if you don't believe me."
At publishing time, the referees had been last seen stuffing stacks of cash into their suitcases and sprinting out of State Farm Stadium to climb aboard the Chiefs' team bus.
Love the Bee
stay tuned for next year’s Supper Bowl!
The ref called holding.
The player said he was holding.
The other player sad he was being held.
And the whole reason for the holding was because the Eagles allowed 2 touchdowns on 2 of the same plays from earlier in the game.
It was a good decision to try to get away with a hold rather than get burned for the third time.
But by then, the ref was watching for it.
I did not watch the game live, but watched a short video of the questioned call and its pretty easy to see how the ref thought it was holding. He had his right hand hooked around the body and his left hand in a fist on the jersey and it looked like he pulled it.
Did he “hold” him? Not really, but it sure looked like it.
In fact, even if they had video review I am not sure the review booth would have overturned the call. How would you? It “looked like a hold”. The television announcer did not do anyone favors with his comments either.
It’s a 60 minute game. Hard to blame “one play” and there will always be some 50/50 calls.
It’s an old axiom in every sport from archery to wrestling, never leave the outcome of the contest in the hands of the referees. If the Eagles had been up by 14 when that call was made, they still would have won.
I thought it wasn’t much and it was close enough to the end of the game that it would have been better to not call it.
But the player that got called for holding said that he held but he was hoping he could get away with it.
Being a Steelers fan, it doesn’t break my heart that the call was against Philly.
The Game is becoming a joke.
Bee should have noted the thank you gift:
Bugatti La Voiture Noire. $18.7 million. AAA road service and oil changes not included.
Someone is pulling on someone else’s jersey on every single play, in every single game that has ever been played in the nfl.
That really isn’t satire.
"We kept it close until the fourth quarter," added another official. "That's our job. Then we have to agree on which team should win and officiate accordingly. There are millions of advertising dollars at stake. We have to make sure we get it right."
.
It just a coincidence that penalties helped the Chiefs run out the clock on both the AFC Championship and Super Bowl.
My son’s baseball coach used to say if we score enough runs, bad calls don’t factor into our wins.
That call would have made no difference if Jalen Hurts had not coughed up the ball earlier in the game, allowing the Chiefs to score. They otherwise played well enough to win.
Your son’s coach is absolutely correct.
