I will post about the murder of babies right here.

People who get upset about cruelty to animals, but are indifferent to murdered babies, are sick. Or evil ...

I never said I was for breed-specific legislation (BSL).

I sympathize with it, but it is impossible, because they are animals who vary, not guns which have absolute features with blueprints.

Many people screw up IDs of dogs (much less other animals). One of our FReepers who was a Labrador nut had people mistake her dogs for PBTs.

I’m largely against that because a) people don’t know what they’re talking about, and even when we do, we can’t verify except AKC papers if a dog is a pure this or that and b) it might be abused to expand to dogs people are just always scared of, though they have much less history of atrocities.

If people would be logical and immediately deal with individual dogs who have proven tenaciously vicious (not just a provoked attack on a criminal, e.g.), that would be much more logical.

But no, we have to “shelter” them and PC woke try to send them to some other sucker.

Bring back kill impounds.

I have no illusions about animals anymore. I got rid of that childish, impractical view some time ago. I love them, but will not sacrifice human safety for them. Nor much else - I do not cast aspersions upon people just for having a hard time dealing with animals and “giving up”, etc. Nope. We don’t all have that luxury of sacrificing our families and neighbors to save 1 stupid dog.

Here is the prime article I wanted to find:

http://thetruthaboutpitbulls.blogspot.com/2010/08/nanny-dog-myth-revealed.html

(Notice the VERY TOP SMALL PRINT - “Bad Rap” disowned the nanny myth.)

Within this, you’ll find spin-off links to other great pieces going over history.

LOL. You bring to mind my last German Shepherd and our old doggie neighbors.

My last (extremely allergic all her life) GS was a very mild, kindly, happy dog, and kind of stupid (in some ways) dog. Didn’t have much guardianship in her brain.

So, people could come right up to our house and she had no clue - until a knock, etc. Then she might get excited.

Meanwhile, across the cul-de-sac was a family with 2 litter-brother Labradors. The chocolate was the stereotypical dopey dog. But his brother, the yellow, was “dog aggressive” so she didn’t let him out, and you could hear him bark alot.

So, when people would knock on our door, all the way across the street, a Labrador would viciously bark while our dumb German Shepherd was caught unawares!

It was hysterical!

And there we go again.
After losing my last PB after eighteen years I decided to never have another dog, I cannot bear burying another.
I think I’ve had every “Vicious” breed ever named as such, PB, Rotty, GS, Doberman.
None were ever vicious, but I have seen supposedly cuddly breeds that you dare not approach when the owner was a Loser type.
My new neighbor has a Blue Healer that may have to be shot if it comes into my yard again.
I would hate to have to do that, but I’m not going to be bit on my own property.

That was funny.

I owned labs and loved them. GS, but I was afraid he would hurt someone and had to find a home in the country for him. He was an alpha male. I would pet any lab and most GS on sight. I like pit bulls, but I would never pet one unless the owner told me it was ok. Probably should not anyway, but I just like them too much. As for little yapping dogs, let me just say I have learned to keep my hands to myself.😉

I’ve actually liked many small dogs. Including my sisters, who has mostly been owned by her son (RIP). Some of course have been scary, others just annoying.

Don’t conflate “alpha” with vicious or unreliable. My bestest dog ever, my first pedigree GS, was very much dominant, but docile and joyous. She was bold and would assert herself, but only once did she ever even look vicious (she’s had multiple opportunities both people and dogs) - when my sisters young GS tried to mount her in our yard. Oh, she turned on him so fast and drove him clear across the yard for daring. Snarling and teeth everywhere. He got the message and she stopped.

She was a very stable, solid dog who was fully trustworthy and could handle herself excellently. I was proud of her. Proud. (How many people say that about their dog?)

Anyway, dominant does not mean aggressive. Assertive, definitely, but not aggressive.

Gotcha. This GS was not vicious. He was in a pen, under excercised. Champion German bloodline. The dominant male in the litter. Beautiful, magnificent animal.

I thought training and socialization would make him manageable. Boy, was I ever wrong. He would embarass me at the group lessons and I would have to restrain him with a choke collar. He was likely to chase a bicyclist. One time someone stopped a car to speak to him, and he acted like he was going to attack. When he got out of the pen he would scare me half to death thinking what might happen.

At the vets, it took three of us to try to get the second nostril for the kennel cough medicine. We could not man handle him to get him to take the medicine. At no time in that situation was I afraid he would bite one of us, although that was quite a physical struggle.

I was able to place him with a family in the country who needed protection and had a 4 acre fenced yard. Win/win situation. I think I sold him for $100. 1 year old. Could have sold him for $200 to someone in the city; not a good situation. One amazing thing is a man who loved GSs offered to take him if I could not place him, out of kindness. This guy had built a washing facility for his GSs, but already had a full kennel.

I can remember taking him out into the woods and watching him enjoy checking out the area. Very athletic dog, just amazing. Extremely energetic. He would literally run circles around me.

I’m educated plenty when it comes to dogs. Maybe it’s you who should get a clue.

“I never said I was for breed-specific legislation (BSL).”

Good.

“I sympathize with it...”

Not so good. Because it is a short walk from sympathy to support.

You go on to mention purebreds and AKC papers. I suggest that the better dogs are the hybrids, or mutts, as the more viable genes are passed on; thus, the mixed breed dogs generally exhibit the better traits of both parents. But training — no matter the breed or the mixture — is absolutely essential. Anyone who does not train and socialize his or her dog should not have one. Dogs are pack animals, and their owners MUST be the alpha.

“If people would be logical and immediately deal with individual dogs who have proven tenaciously vicious (not just a provoked attack on a criminal, e.g.), that would be much more logical.”

We are in agreement on this. But that does not mean summarily killing them.

“Bring back kill impounds.”

Absolutely not.

Against the rules, I know, but the linked story does give information about the owner, and the charges that the county is seeking against him.

The shelter reveals the dog's name as KO and records show that the dog is owned by 30-year-old Robert Ruiz Jr. Based on the footage and additional information, Animal Services is seeking an arrest warrant for Mr. Ruiz for abandoning an animal willfully. Miraculously, KO did not suffer serious injuries from the razor wire.
