Golden Retriever Protects 2 Young Louisiana Girls Lost in The Woods
The Pet Zealot ^ | December 21, 2022 | James Alain L.

Many parents will testify that it takes only a moment for a tragedy to occur. You can be watching over your kids exhaustively and within a moment and in the twinkling of an eye, they are gone.

That is what happened on November 29, 2022, when Abigail, a 7-year-old girl and her 4-year-old sister Cecilia vanished from their parent's home in Louisiana. The young girls' parents, Mary and Justin Bourg, tearfully said their Golden Retriever family dog named Artemis first ran into the woods to explore and the girls followed him.

........Artemis first ran into the woods to explore ......

Explore? No, a Golden Retriever runs into the woods because she saw a squirrel, or a bird, or a possum, or a chipmunk, or a blowing leaf, or ........

I've been blessed with three dogs over my life that had the loyalty, protectiveness instinct to have the kind of obsessive bravery that Artimis had to these two girls.

1. Trouble… he was a mix breed of standard collie + st. bernard. Biggest damn collie you ever saw. Herding dog at the ranch, smart, gentle, incredibly protective.

2. Sierra…. Golden Retriever. My gawd incredibly gentle and protective of my son.

3. Carter…. Siberian Husky…. Pack animal. The family is instinctively the pack, especially children. Gentle and playful. If you're a bad person or animal to the pack, you don't want to mess with a husky.

Artemis, who’s a good boy? You’re a good boy! They’re chowhounds.Give that pup a steak for Christmas and he’ll consider the debt paid in full, though he’d gladly do it again for free. Good dog

You are doubting the author’s deep insights into animal behavior? (just kidding)

I’m with you. I saw that ridiculous “to explore” and thought the author was nuts. I’m seeing this type of anthropomorphism all the time lately.

Golden Retriever and Labrador Retrievers are both great breeds for families with children. They are easy to train, gentle with young children, but protective of their pack.

Exactly (I have Labs).

Albert Payson Terhune (who wrote the "Lad of Sunnybank" series about a Rough Collie) said that you don't need a protection dog breed . . . you just need a dog that loves you.

My sweet cuddly Yellow Lab looks like Cerberus when a stranger comes up the driveway. She has a LOT of teeth, and she shows every last one and wrinkles up her face like a Shar Pei. And one time I was walking my little (38 pounds) Chocolate Lab, who was a great big dog in a miniature dog suit, when a pit bull began stalking us. She got between me and the dog, put her head down, fluffed up all her hackles, and growled a growl that sounded like it came direct from the pits of Hell. I didn't know she had it in her!

Mr. Pit said, "Gosh . . . I just remembered I have an appointment across town!" and made tracks. And Shelley got a great big chunk of steak!
