They never learn: French citizens turning in guns by the thousands as government demands disarmament of the people

As Americans know, the surest way to create a tyrannical government is to ensure the general public has no means to resist authoritarian measures.

The French used to understand this as well, considering that one of the country’s foremost scholars, Alexis de Tocqueville — author of “Democracy In America,” circa the late 1700s — was a seminal work in describing the benefits and advantages of a free, open society.

That included a favorable analysis of the U.S. Constitution, a truly unique document written by our founders and ratified by the new states that empowered people over their government and guaranteed them fundamental rights, like the right to keep and bear arms (again, so that government could not become too powerful and tyrannical).

Fast-forward to the present.

De Tocqueville is long gone, and the French republic is a shell of its former self, as evidenced by the thousands of citizens who are now turning in “illegal” guns to their masters (as if they learned nothing from World War II, either).

I wouldn't believe this propaganda from the Left. The French are likely hearing the same lies from the U.S. about successful gun buy backs.

The Yellow Vests in France know exactly what they're up against and aren't turning in any guns.

The Froggies surrendered to the Nazi before. This time the Nazis don’t have to fire a shot.

The game in the early days of the Bolshevik revolution delivering the first years of the Soviet Socialist state was to confiscate guns from the proles. Same act a little more than a century later.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Or, meet the new boss, same as the old.

Honestly you could say the same thing about our southern border.

What the hell are the Froggies turning in their guns for? Just to be like the United States? I haven’t read anything about Frog public school brats “mass murdering” each other like they do here in this “country.”

In France, there is, however, no limit on the number of white flags that one is allowed to possess.

I agree with almost everything Mr. Hayes said, except, for the record, de Tocqueville visited America in 1831, not “circa 1700’s”.

as government demands disarmament of the people

This isn't entirely true.

This was an effort to compel French citizens to turn in unlicensed guns and it was targeted to people who had guns in their possession that they didn't want. Think elderly widows whose late husbands left behind rifles in attics and pistols in cupboards.

They were given he option of turning them in or registering these weapons.

There are over six million privately owned firearms in France. This targeted about 60,000 of them or 1%. Not really a gun confiscation. More like a buyback without the cash. Not great but not totally evil.

I know a fellow in South Carolina who handles a semi-public collection of WWII artifacts for the State Museum and welcomes donations. He is always having people bring him things ‘they found in the basement they did not know Dad had.’

He has collected an extensive collection of rifles and handguns. But also, flame throwers, Bangalore Torpedoes and Panzerfasts, etc.

Canada losing its guns, France losing its guns, and Australia losing its guns.

And the price of ammunition?

In Europe, France has been considered gun friendly!
I am not sure what is this? I guess they are changing the laws or whatever.
The article claims that there are about 6 millions unregistered guns in France.
They turned in 65,000, about 1%!
Probably not working guns or guns used in crime.

I am guessing no one remembers when a boater in distress shot off an emergency flare off the coast of France and France surrendered.

The French lost most of their young men in WWI. They really did not have enough military aged men to engage the Germans in WWII. More than that, they didn’t want to lose the next generation.
