Mini gas chambers designed for euthanasia make even assisted-suicide supporters uneasy

The headline in the Scottish Daily Express succinctly summarizes the reaction to a recent invention by Australian Dr. Philip “Death” Nitschke: “Outrage as scientist backs gas chamber ‘death pod’ scheme for Scotland.” Nitschke has become notorious over the past several years due to his high-profile promotion of his “do-it-yourself death pods,” airtight capsule-shaped pods in which the suicidal can seal themselves and release a nitrogen gas that will knock them out in 60 seconds and kill them within 10. It is not as swift a death as the lethal injection method but does have the benefit of ensuring that other people do not have to be involved.

Nitschke first marketed his “Sarco” death pods to the Switzerland last year — a prime definition for “suicide tourism” where people can travel to have themselves killed in a variety of spa-like resorts created for that purpose. “Sarco” is short for “sarcophagus,” but the device is designed to look like a spaceship to symbolize the send-off to a new “destination,” as one Swiss suicide provider noted. The Sarco pods have been displayed in the Netherlands and Germany but have only been used in Switzerland. Nitschke hopes that his death pods will become widely available through downloadable designs and 3-D printing.

Hey boys and girls, the gas chambers are back in Germany! Now updated looks for the 21st Century!

(This timeline sucks.)

No kidding. Nitrogen gas would be the most humane way for them to go. Sedate them prior. Then just pop on a face gas mask and open up the tank.

Consider our normal air is already about 78%, 21% O2, and rest, trace amounts of co2 and other gases.

Kind of shows what a racket nitrogen filled tires are. Regular air already puts 78% nitrogen in your tires.

“The gasping reflex is triggered by excess CO2 build-up in the lungs,”

Close, but it’s actually buildup of CO2 in the bloodstream. It lowers the pH, from the creation of carbonic acid in it.

The decrease in pH causes the discomfort and panic effect in people.

Oxygen starvation is not sensed much at all. So people can suffocate (removal of adequate Oxygen) in both Nitrogen and CO2 (and anything other than good ole O2). But the pH effect causes autonomic reaction from CO2 buildup.

Carbon Monoxide is even surer. It binds to hemoglobin permanently, basically sabotaging the blood. 3 deep breaths of pure CO, and you’re dead. Not even immediate pure O2 and CPR can save ya.

FRiend, I completely understand. My wife worked as a nurse’s aide in her younger days and my mother-in-law was a lifelong RN, they both have told me horror stories of how things work in a lot of those ‘care’ facilities.

Yes, but I believe CO would instigate the same reflexive feel that CO2 does - though I could be wrong.

"Everyone in the room died apparently unaware there was a problem."

I'm aware of a case of a worker in a processing plant who was responsible for cleaning the inside surfaces of a very large tank. He wore an oxygen mask to protect from toxic fumes.

He entered the tank to work one time and quickly passed out. His co-workers saw that he had a problem and dragged him out and removed his mask. He very quickly recovered and went back to work.

He passed out a second time and required rescue again. Only then was it recognized that his mask had been plugged into a source of nitrogen instead of air. After that they decided that maybe it wasn't a very good idea to use the same connectors on both nitrogen and air.

The guy was very lucky to survive.

Replace the nitrogen with helium. May as well have a few laughs over the last words.

Don’t these people have garages and car keys? We’ve had do-it-yourself death pods for decades.

Undoubtedly designed by extremely competent German engineers.

I had a couple of rust bucket beater vehicles in Michigan. Better not start ‘em up in an enclosed space.

I was just thinking about the death of Edward G. Robinson in one scene from that movie.

I remember reading of a similar death when men went into a sewer and died of sewer gas.

Yeah the only reason they use 100% nitrogen in race car tires is a more linear temp/pressure relationship. In street cars it’s trivial.

UNLESS you can’t afford a special death pod. Then a beater in an enclosed space will do.
