In a bid to prevent a global food crisis, the United Nations has resorted to begging Russia for mercy concerning its export of fertilizer to Western countries that need it for crops.
Right now, a pipeline that once transported ammonia from Russia to Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Yuzhny (renamed “Pivdennyi”) is offline due to Western sanctions against Russia. Consequently, much-needed fertilizer has stopped flowing.
Before the war, Russia accounted for about 20 percent of all global exports of ammonia, a key ingredient in fertilizer production. The ammonia pipeline in question has been closed since the February invasion began. (Related: The UN was warning back towards the start of covid that a “famine of biblical proportions” was soon to come.)
The pipeline is capable of transferring 2.3 million tons of ammonia per year, which would be really nice right about now amid skyrocketing fertilizer prices.

Russia doesn’t make water though.
Europe is in major drought.
China is in major drought.
The western USA is in major drought.
Even in parts of Tennessee the corn is brown.
Not sure if the ammonia will help the situation.
The Russian “begging” article he links to uses the word “urges”.
‘UN urges Moscow and Kiev to allow fertilizer exports – FT’
“Urges” or “begs,” just words inferring the same sentiment: Give us fertilizer please, pretty please........
I’m not a Russophile — but it seems a tad arrogant to sanction trade with a nation, and then beg that same nation to sell you stuff.
I’d say it’s extremely arrogant.
Urging is required in dating but begging means never getting laid.
We can make water.
We have the tech.
desalination plants just have to be built.
and by ‘we’ i mean the whole world.
govt’s aren’t building to support their populations... as they’re supposed to.
hehe
ummm, for next year?
Fertilizer is just value-added energy.
We can’t make enough water for widespread agriculture.
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait make fresh water from seawater.
But they are not agricultural giants.
Maybe if we can be successful with fusion reactors that might change, a lot.
Wise words.
We need to start by getting rid of water mismanagement.
China will get what it needs from Russia and vice versa.
They’re using Russia as a scapegoat. Many UN nations were already into banning fertilizer anyway. Now the UN can blame Russia for it.
Desalinization requires tons of energy.
Europe is already short on energy.
China has huge amounts of natural fertilizer.
Poop & pee from 1400 Million people. China is already using that resource.
They’re using Russia as a scapegoat. Many UN nations were already into banning fertilizer anyway. Now the UN can blame Russia for it.

Yup!
Russia has been shoveling enough manure to justify their invasion of a sovereign nation that there should be no shortage of fertilizer.
