Here is what children need:

1. Children need a mother and a father who love each other and work together as a team.

2. Children need a bicycle, neighbors, and cousins.

3. Children need a grandma to bake with and a grandpa to take em fishing.

4. Children need a church, a Sunday School Class, and a truth telling Preacher.

5. Children need a dinner time with home cooked food, prayer, and conversation.

6. Children need Sunday afternoon football and fried chicken.

7. Children need books on tape and coloring pages.

8. Children need summers at the beach and bazooka bubble gum.

9. Children need a trip to Arlington and Fourth of July Fireworks.

10. Children need fire pits, smores, ghost stories, the drive in, and real popcorn.

11. Children need discipline from their parents.

12. Children need chores, a job, a way to earn what they want.

13. Children need education that recognizes mama and daddy as the authority, God as the creator, and the Bible as the roadmap.

This is not about some agenda, this is about children. Get back to basics: faith, family, & good ole fashioned fun.

Children need a pet and responsibility for it.

It teaches them duty, compassion, and all sorts of things.

Children need your time. Not buying them stuff or fancy vacations. Just your simple time. Lots of it. A trip to the super market. Sitting in rainy bleachers at their t-ball games. And so on. Time to listen to them.

My “baby” is 35 and I still take time to be with her doing what on the surface looks like the most mudane things. It’s a time to listen. And build that bond between us that material things can’t.

As I first said years ago and still today “In the company of my daughter”. Such a valuable gift she gives me.

I would agree with all of it except the Sunday afternoon football. Why can’t people realize that not all are football fans? If there is any interest in sports, there are several choices. How about the hill climbs or drag races? Maybe even Billiards tournaments?

It’s OK but instead of books on tape they need a parent to read to them and discuss what has been read.

They don’t need books on tape any more than they need the pacifier of a string of videos.

The layers of a stable society - start with the family, then neighborhood, then local church, community, and civic organizations.

Central Government should be a mere afterthought.

Children also need time to themselves. So many kids are ‘overbooked’ these days - or at least, they were before Covid. I remember Summer vacations being one of the most valuable, learning times for me - time wandering alone, reading (a lot!) thinking and wondering.

They need sufficient alone time, and to learn to make themselves happy with what’s at hand. One of the most incomprehensible things to me has been hearing a child say that he or she is ‘bored’.

Children need your time.

Yep, they need lots of it, dinner time, story time, talk time, church time etc. People have become too busy now that families need two incomes to pay the taxes and they off board this needed time to K-12 teachers and the muppets and videos etc. K-12 is killing the kids these days. Misplaced priorities, like climate change instead of mental wellness.

*** 2. Children need a bicycle, neighbors, and cousins.***

I never had a bike, and sometimes we had neighbors. Had lots of cousins and 5 siblings, though. Cousins we saw a few times a year. I never had a bike, though. Only one sister had one, when she had to take herself to junior college, which was just a mile or two away, and gas was precious. That was rationed out for only necessary trips and they had to be well-planned in advance.

Eyeball to eyeball contact and lots of it. (Holding your smart phone at the same time doesn’t count)

Mothers at home, not at work.

Kill your screens.

Bicycles are good for kids. They give them an opportunity to experiment with freedom.

We didn’t have a lot as young kids, but our folks were always sure that we had bikes.
