Not only does the US want to fight China to the last Indian, but now it’s implied that it wants countless Indians to potentially starve to death in order to feed America’s vassal states across the Global South whose governments it hopes to uphold for political reasons. Put another way, the US would prefer for Indians to die than for American-aligned governments in the Global South to fall in the face of famine-driven protests.
US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield is aghast that India announced that it’s restricting wheat exports. In her words, “We are encouraging countries not to restrict exports because we think that any restriction on exports will exacerbate the food shortages. But you’ve again – India will be one of the countries participating in our meeting at the Security Council and we hope they can, as they hear our concerns, reconsider their position.” This is perhaps the most arrogant form of pressure that America has attempted to impose upon India since it started this trend to punish New Delhi for its policy of principled neutrality towards Russia’s ongoing special military operation in Ukraine.
It’s one thing for its officials to rant about how India is supposedly on the wrong side of history for not publicly condemning or sanctioning Russia and another entirely to imply that it has no right to ensure domestic food security for the over 1.3 billion people that its government is responsible for. The US’ campaign to pressure India into abandoning its neutrality was already dead on arrival, but now America is making matters worse by attempting to meddle in the literally life-and-death affairs of its people. Average Indians might understandably begin to regard the US’ intentions with the utmost suspicion and perhaps never trust their country’s newfound military-strategic partner again.
After all, every country has the right to ensure domestic food security. It’s not India’s fault that one of the most far-reaching consequences of the US-led West’s unprecedented sanctions against Russia is the global disruption of the food supply chain and heightened risk of famine across the Global South. As the world’s second most populous country that many predict will soon take first place, India has a responsibility not just to its own people, but to the entire international community to prevent the collapse of its society that would obviously have global repercussions if it happened. Instead of condemning India’s food security strategy, the US should enthusiastically praise it.
The very fact that it isn’t doing this, however, shows that Indian lives literally don’t matter to American strategists. That’s not the attitude of an actual ally, but of a hegemon that’s shamelessly putting its own strategic interests over its supposed partner’s legitimate humanitarian ones.
Average Indians should reflect on the dire implications of what the US wants their country to do and then consider reassessing their stance towards that declining hegemon. It’s one thing to continue liking American culture and technological products, and another to continue supporting its unipolar worldview that it hopes to impose upon everyone else at their expense regardless of however many have to die. No genuinely patriotic individual anywhere in the world can support a foreign country that wants their own people to die in order to serve its interests. America’s soft power mask just slipped when it implied this demand upon India, whose people are now able to see its true face and realize what it’s all about.
Italy’s Salvini Warns Food Shortages Could Cause 20 Million African Migrants To Enter Europe
India produces a lot of wheat, but they have a billion people to feed. They don’t really export all that much. It’s not an insignificant amount, but if they don’t export, it won’t be the end of the world.
Huge population and they struggle with feeding everyone under even normal circumstances. I have no problem with this as a short term precaution.
How about if we stop ethanol subsidies??
That might be worthwhile.
This is the Biden admin. for you. This is also globalization where countries demand things from other countries whether they want to participate or not. Right now the US is not making friends but enemies. Thanks LGB!
America used to be able to keep its schizophrenia within the family. Now, the whole world has to see it.
“America’s vassal states across the Global South”
Vassal states? We do not have any vassal states across the global south.
But dross like this is a good reminder that India’s foreign policy interests are generally orthogonal to ours. India still views Russia as a potential counterweight to China.
Ever notice how the Brandon Administration doesn’t actually DO very much for Americans, including representing America on the world stage.
All they ever do is SAY stuff. Really stupid stuff.
Ahhh.....the “India First” rule.
Perhaps Bidung can persuade Haiti to ship us some red clay
Yesterday we read that Pakistan is near bankrupt. How long before they spoil for a confrontation with India?
I bet India is feeling secure with all thos Russian tanks that have been proven to be junk along with all those MiGs.
Stopping Ethanol subsidies would make corn affordable again for many countries south of our border, which might actually encourage some of them to stay home.
Can’t have that happening.
This is the way globalism will work. Countries who produce will be forced to give to those who don’t or can’t produce.
Equality
We’ll all be equally mediocre at best.
This shows the Zubu brothers for what they are: anti-U.S.A. zealots.
As long as the United States of America withholds exporting food to the rest of the world so our own people don’t go hungry.
We could make the ethanol and lower the price.
22,087,974 acres in the US are not in production due to FedGov policies.

What's with people who *don't* do that?
Well said. There is not a damned thing wrong with practicing enlightened self interest.
