India, the world’s second largest producer of wheat, has banned all exports with immediate effect after a heatwave affected the crop.
A notice in the government gazette by the directorate of foreign trade, dated Friday, said a rise in global prices for wheat was threatening the food security of India and neighboring and vulnerable countries.
A key aim is to control rising domestic prices. Global wheat prices have increased by more than 40% since the beginning of the year.
Before the war, Ukraine and Russia accounted for a third of global wheat and barley exports. Since Russia’s 24 February invasion, Ukraine’s ports have been blocked and civilian infrastructure and grain silos destroyed.
At the same time, India’s own wheat harvest has suffered a record-breaking heatwave that is stunting production.

India has a lot of mouths to feed. I don’t blame them for taking care of their citizens first.
Hmmm. Isn’t Ukraine also a big wheat exporter?
Man... every day, huge moves.
I hope our current administration is compassionate enough to make sure American wheat goes first to “undocumented workers”.
The Ukrainian agricultural enterprises are certainly in no position to export any wheat, that is for sure. No access to seaports, limited capability to harvest the crop they now have, and serious unrest in the countryside.
The world is going to have to pull up the grass in their own back yards and chew on that. Dirt and all.
Don’t like to say widespread famine, but famine, nonetheless. And the world’s granaries are already nearly empty.
How about cake; do we have enough cake for everyone;
You can bet that the Biden regime will send American wheat to Ukraine before they even consider doing anything about formula shortages here.
Can we stop paying farmers NOT to plant crops yet?
India produces a little over 100 million metric tons of wheat annually, and typically it exports a few percent of the crop. Almost all wheat grown in India is consumed in India.
This is nonsense. India isn’t even in the top 15. (2020 numbers)
Russia: US$7.9 billion (17.6% of total wheat exports)
United States: $6.32 billion (14.1%)
Canada: $6.3 billion (14%)
France: $4.5 billion (10.1%)
Ukraine: $3.6 billion (8%)
Australia: $2.7 billion (6%)
Argentina: $2.12 billion (4.7%)
Germany: $2.1 billion (4.7%)
Kazakhstan: $1.1 billion (2.5%)
Poland: $1 billion (2.3%)
Romania: $948.8 million (2.1%)
Lithuania: $910.7 million (2%)
Bulgaria: $699.2 million (1.6%)
Latvia: $649.2 million (1.4%)
Hungary: $630.6 million (1.4%)
They might be second largest producer, idk.
But they don’t even make the top 10 exporters of wheat.
Nor are they among the top importers of wheat
1 Indonesia 11,200
2 Egypt 11,000
3 Turkey 10,000
4 China 9,500
5 Algeria 7,900
6 Bangladesh 7,500
7 Morocco 7,000
8 Nigeria 6,500
9 Brazil 6,400
10 Philippines 6,300
11 Iran, Islamic Republic Of 5,500
12 Japan 5,300
13 Mexico 5,200
14 EU-27 5,000
15 Korea, Republic Of 4,200
Of the above, Egypt is highly dependent on wheat as a major component of the Egyptian diet, and they are very seriously out of balance between domestic production and imports.
Biden has us starving for oil when we are sitting on gazillions of barrels so there is every chance he can do it for food while we are the bread basket of the world.
Now they’re holding the tail of a winning cow!

China and India are also the most populous countries in the world so the need to produce a lot to feed their people.

Southwest PA. $4.65/gal.
Diesel is well over $6.00.
“I hope our current administration is compassionate enough to make sure American wheat goes first to “undocumented workers”.”
It’s just to the right of the Baby Formula. That’s why I support the Biden Administration on Ukraine.
Yep. A few years back, someone here on FR stated that as many people just graduated from high school in China as the entire population of the US.
