Disney’s market cap has shrunk by nearly $34 billion since the company expressed its full-throated opposition to a Florida law banning instruction of gender identity and sexual orientation in public schools for kindergarten through third grade.
Florida lawmakers in March passed HB 1557, dubbed by opponents as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis on March 28.
That same day, Disney waded deeply into the controversy, issuing a statement highly critical of HB 1557 and saying it was the company’s objective to have it repealed.
From March 28, the day the company issued the statement, to April 22, Disney’s market cap has fallen by around $33.9 billion.
Backers of the legislation say it gives parents more power around deciding how and when topics relating to LGBTQ issues can be introduced to their children. It also gives parents the opportunity to sue school districts for violations of the rules set out in the legislation.
“Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards,” the bill (pdf) reads.
DeSantis said on March 28, the day he signed the bill, that “parents have every right to be informed about services offered to their child at school, and should be protected from schools using classroom instruction to sexualize their kids as young as 5 years old.”
On the same day that DeSantis signed the bill, Disney issued a statement saying that “Florida’s HB 1557, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law.”
Disney added that it was the company’s goal “for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts.”
Disney’s declaration of opposition to the bill prompted some parents’ groups to call for boycotts of the company’s products, movies, theme parks, and shows.
Based on 1.82 billion outstanding shares and on the March 28 share price of $136.90, Disney’s market cap stood at some $249.2 billion. With its shares having fallen to $118.27 on April 22, Disney’s value as measured by market capitalization has declined to $215.3 billion, a drop of $33.9 billion.
On April 22, DeSantis signed a legislature-passed bill to dissolve Walt Disney World’s self-governing status in Florida, with potential tax implications for the company.
DeSantis on Friday made reference to Disney’s pledge to have HB 1557 repealed.
Summarizing, people quit believing God exists even though it's obvious through creation that God exists. So God removes His protecting had from part of people's sinful nature so that it's easier to give into heterosexual sin. The idea being that we'd get so depraved we'd take a step back and say to ourselves: "Wait a second! How did we get so depraved? We need to get back to like we once were and get back with God." But if that doesn't work then God removes His protective hand some more to the point that homosexuality seems cool. If we don't wake up and go: "What? How'd I get to the point that my idea of good sex is tearing up my butt? I need to get back to God.", then He removes even more of His protective hand from our sinful nature.
We're seeing that play out today just like it played out 2,000 years ago in Paul's time (and the centuries leading up to Paul's time). We're basically undoing from our culture the positive effects of the First and Second Great Awakenings. God wants us back and is hoping the really bad effects of our sinful nature wakes us up.
We are at a point where the acceptable conservative position seems to be that you must wait until a child is 8 years old before teaching them “sexual orientation or gender identity”. Sounds like a good plan.
Good.
Hope the trend continues.
BTTT!
Looks like another excellent investment opportunity for a certain investor we all know.
My family and I have many fond memories of our visits to Disney World years ago when my kids were still small. EPCOT, too. Memories I wouldn't trade for the world.
Yet look at it now, and what has happened; a slow, vile, cultural rot that infiltrated and has now largely subsumed what was once a grand enterprise. It's a damned shame.
The left poisons and destroys everything it touches. Everything. It is long past time to turn back this decadent tide, and hopefully this is a sign that this turnaround has finally begun.
Mentally disturbed much?
He might be a little stretched right now…
I think it is because of those memories that we are all so angry and willing to do whatever it takes to put Disney back on track.
As I understand it, Iger is the one who started Disney on its slide into woke-ness.
“I hope they lose more....”
They won’t lose more. There are many more woke fools who are more than glad to have Disney take their money.
That’s why “I hope”, and I’m not shorting them…
9 year’s old not, not 8. The legal Muslim age.
There was no sound on, but what I saw was odd. I did not recognize the teams. The only White people on the Court were carrying whistles. The players travel, they carry, they cannot dribble, and almost every shot was a dunk. There were some 3-Pointers, mostly failed attempts. The shoving and pushing was not allowed when I watched years ago. These guys ought to be wearing Football pads if this was the new normal.
I too stopped watching the NFL following that flag kneeling thing, but I stopped watching all other Pro Sports by 1994 with that MLB strike.
There is no room in my life for this foolishness. I do not understand the appeal. Upon reflection, I suppose that I never really did.
They’ll be promoted. Bet on it!
Officially, no..but there are rumors that recently-retired CEO Bob Iger is warming up in the bullpen for a return to the corner office. While the woke mobs in the animation division and the film studio promise more protests and walk-outs, the bean counters are looking at revenue projections and are looking a window to jump out of.
Watch the summer numbers for Disneyland, Disney World and some of the new movies. Lots of speculation that visits and ticket sales will be down significantly, as flyover country reacts to the Mouse that Went Woke. Also, it looks like sign-ups for Disney + have been slowing since last fall and you may see a net decrease in the months ahead: https://fortune.com/2021/11/10/disney-streaming-sign-up-growth-disappoints-wall-street-sending-shares-tumbling-3/
There’s a belief that Iger could somehow navigate the wokeness path without alienating the “ordinary” Americans the company relies on for its revenue. But it’s a pipe dream; Walt’s company has gone too far for 98% of its customer base and they will pay a heavy price. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch....
When I first stopped, I felt like I was missing out. Then I started reading more and going on hikes/walks. Eventually I couldn’t believe how much time I had wasted watching men play a game. I felt embarrassed that I did.
Ever see those hidden sexual images their animators included in their family movies with a child target audience.
Yeah, bye.
Yep. Deviants are deviant, and homosexuals are deviants.
When your identity is linked directly to your genitalia, something is wrong.
