While no media have a good track record of outlining the conflict in Ukraine, retired Col. Douglas Macgregor has the most consistent perspective that reconciles what little factual information is visible with the reality on the ground.
In this recent interview, Macgregor notes the Russian operation is currently focused on securing the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine, where fighting has been taking place since 2014. During an earlier interview on CNN, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy noted the largest and most experienced elements of the Ukrainian army are located in this region. According to Zelenskyy, approximately 44,000 Ukrainian troops are there; oddly, Zelenskyy seemed to concede that he has no control over what’s happening there.
During this segment, Macgregor notes the current Russian objective is to encircle those eastern Ukraine forces, cut them off from western supply lines, and then slowly and methodically eliminate them – while separating them from Russian speaking citizens in the region. Macgregor notes a particular concern once those Ukraine forces are eliminated. WATCH:

The most dangerous time will be when the Russians are close to achieving their objective in Eastern Ukraine, and the western media will be faced with having to reconcile the difference between the propaganda they have been selling to western citizens and the actual truth on the ground. That’s when the western alliance is likely to do something drastic.
I think the Col. is very accurate about the reality of this conflict.
Our media refuses to even hint at the truth.

Military career
Macgregor led a contingent of 49 fighting vehicles in “the last great tank battle of the 20th century” without suffering any casualties.
Macgregor was the “squadron operations officer who essentially directed the Battle of 73 Easting” during the Gulf War.[2] Facing an Iraqi Republican Guard opponent, he led a contingent consisting of 19 tanks, 26 Bradley Fighting Vehicles and 4 M1064 mortar carriers through the sandstorm to the 73 Easting at roughly 16:18 hours on 26 February 1991 destroyed almost 70 Iraqi armored vehicles with no U.S. casualties in a 23-minute span of the battle.[2] He was at the front of the formation in the center with Eagle Troop on the right and Ghost Troop on the left. Macgregor designated Eagle Troop the main attack and positioned himself to the left of Eagle Troop. Eagle Troop Scouts subsequently followed Macgregor’s tank through a minefield during which his crew destroyed two enemy tanks. As Macgregor was towards the front of the battle involved in shooting, he didn’t “request artillery support or report events to superiors until the battle was virtually over, according to one of his superior officers.”[2] The risks he undertook “could have been criticized had the fight turned ugly.”[2]

I am sorry, but this conflict isn’t winding down. They will have to completely overrun all of Ukraine to end the conflict. Calling it victory, while the fight continues will make the Russians look even more inept than they have already. They will be unable to suppress the continued fighting unless they have total victory on the ground. Does anybody believe this will happen when they have already lost the drone war?
My impressions is that there will be a big push by the Russians when the ground is dry, and spring is over. However, unless they completely overrun Ukraine, the fighting will just go on forever like Afghanistan for the Russians all over again. So far Russia has failed at it’s only exit plan (quick victory).
So after weeks of telling us about Russia’s incipient victory he’s still telling us about Russia’s incipient victory.

Surrender only the eastern region which is predominantly Russian already to avoid the humanitarian crisis we are seeing.
Russia has not been performing in a stellar manner.
Encirclement may be very difficult, if it happens.
