New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. Scientists have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6,000-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye color of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today
"Originally, we all had brown eyes," said Professor Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. "But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a "switch," which literally "turned off" the ability to produce brown eyes." The OCA2 gene codes for the so-called P protein, which is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to our hair, eyes and skin. The "switch," which is located in the gene adjacent to OCA2 does not, however, turn off the gene entirely, but rather limits its action to reducing the production of melanin in the iris -- effectively "diluting" brown eyes to blue. The switch's effect on OCA2 is very specific therefore. If the OCA2 gene had been completely destroyed or turned off, human beings would be without melanin in their hair, eyes or skin colour -- a condition known as albinism.

Heterochromia. Rare, but you see it. David Bowie had it.

Neither one of my daughters were born with blue eyes. Oldest started out with a kind of muddy grey, ended up with green. Youngest, she seemed to be brown eyed from the very beginning.
“So green and grey eyes came from ...?”
Same thing. There is only a gene for “brown eyes” or “not-so brown eyes”. The “not-so brown” variety just usually manifests as blue.
True, girls do like bright and sparkly things, and not just to wear on their fingers.
Had that conundrum anyways. She talked B.S. in riddles.
She was quite a character.
Okay.
Nevertheless, babies don’t start out with all the melanin they are going to end up with. Eye color continues to melanize after birth.
How do they know this ancestor was single? Just because they couldn’t locate a marriage license? There weren’t any written languages at the time.
All babies are born with blue eyes and eventually accumulate what ever level of melanin they are genetically due. Both my eyes initially turned brown, but then turned blue again, with a pie-slice of brown left in my left eye. An Italian woman I worked without of college said it was a sign of good luck. A doctor, OTOH, told me it was caused by a mineral deficiency. Either way, I'm still here to talk about it!
Says dr “Ei-Berg”
I knew this girl who had brownish eyes, but they would turn Orange and start to glow when she got pissed off at me.
it was kind of scary all kinds of other anomalous things would happen too.
It could be a nice clear day (except for the chemtrails of course) and she would get pissed at something, the wind would start blowing, her eyes would start glowing, the sky would get dark. Rain would pour down.
I never was able to figure out if it was effect or cause
Now do green eyes!
I wonder what color Adam’s and Eve’s eyes were?
Does that happen when the mother wipes back to front when pregnant?
I seem to remember the first guy with blue eyes was Ferd Berfel.
smart people never assume anything... 😁
they look brown in the Tv adaptation
I thought blue eyes were from spice.
The last time this topic came up on FR, the origin of our first blue-eyed ancestor was Persia.
So, how did some of the Mandan tribe of North Dakota have blue eyes according to the letters of George Catlin?
Catlin believed the Mandans were descended from Prince Madoc a legendary Welsh Prince who was supposed to have sailed to the Americas in 1170 AD.
i am glad i do not identify as a woman... life is so much tougher...
