Denounce Putin or lose your job: Russian conductor Valery Gergiev given public ultimatum

Star conductor and close friend of Putin dropped by his management ahead of deadline to speak out or be fired from Munich Philharmonic

Russia’s star conductor, Valery Gergiev, has been dropped by his management over his close ties to Vladimir Putin as he faces a looming deadline to publicly denounce the Russian president or lose yet another role in his rapidly crumbling career.

The 68-year-old Russian, an old friend and supporter of Putin, has faced increasing pressure to speak out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over the last week. He has been removed from performances around the world and faces more professional punishment if he does not condemn Putin’s aggression in the next 24 hours.

On Sunday, his manager, Marcus Felsner, announced he would be dropping Gergiev, who he called “the greatest conductor alive and an extraordinary human being with a profound sense of decency”, but who “will not, or cannot, publicly end his long-expressed support for a regime that has come to commit such crimes.”

Do you eat meat or use fossil fuels? Then yes, there is someone that thinks you are guilty of crimes against humanity. There are none so blind as those that choose not to see.

Go ahead and support Putin and his many allies who wear different uniforms. I have no difficulty labeling him and his army criminals and the enemy and yes, "cancel" their a*ses.

More than disturbing. The fact that no one sees it (even on this forum) is just as concerning.

um... yeah.

There was a term for this back in the day. I believe it was called “struggle sessions”.

Very disturbing indeed.

So a person’s friends now influence his job.

Not just any person, that's where people are having a difficult time here. I am witnessing what Putin and his army are doing to people and I have zero tolerance. And his "army" wears different uniforms. You can cut him and his allies slack, not me, not for one second.

Well, since you’re Sirius Lee, I’ll answer seriously. The conductor can have whatever politics he wishes. Carnegie Hall can decide to not let him conduct on the basis of his politics; they’re a private business. What CH should not do is play the “recant or be martyred” game; that went out with Diocletian, and free speech and thought is at the core of our rights, not a peripheral afterthought.

I agree that with its resources China is the real threat. And its probably true with its behavior Russia stands athwart globalist aspirations. But it is naive to think the Russia power structure is now America’s friend. Thats not the way the world works.

Totally understandable. But we can't let feelings drive us to the point where we become more like the thing we're against.

Whenever I see George Soros, Sean Penn, Hollywood, the media, the core of the Dem party and billionaires on the same side, I get suspicious. While I think the weight of the equities are on the side of the Ukrainians, there is a lot of lying going on - phony claims, excerpts from video games, photos from years ago. Reminds me of 1991, when a wealthy Kuwaiti 15 year old (daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the US) testified before Congress and lied out her tail about Iraqi soldiers shutting off incubators in Kuwaiti hospitals and leaving babies to die. Not a word of truth in it but it was used by Bush Sr. and a public relations firm hired by Kuwait to whip up war hysteria and she was never prosecuted for lying to Congress.

The invasion had what exactly to do with a New World Order or the globalists ? Eradicating Neo-Nazis serving a ‘far right’ government Putin has given as a reason, and Biden perhaps incidentally, but not Soros in any way I can see.

I see in "degrees", not Black and White. Not to say some things aren't Black and White, but many are not. Yes "cancel culture" in general is wrong as we experience it, it's basically corporate/leftist cancelling everyone opposed. Firing this jamoke isn't cancel culture because of his "political opinion", that's way oversimplification. Think of him as a "symbol" almost a representative for Putin, and Putin ain't Trump, Putin is a cold blooded mass murderer so anyone who says I can be "canceled" for supporting Trump and that's "equivalent" well I'm not going to get anywhere with them.

.....we are all safer and better off when people are at least allowed to have their own opinion then when people are forced to pretend to have an opinion they do not.

Now if people boycott his concerts and don’t buy tickets, that’s one thing. That’s how it should work in a free society.

We have come a long way from “I might not agree with you but I will fight to the death to defend your right to say it”. Sad how quickly we abandon the principles our Constitution represents.

His performances are cancelled by CH, but he's under threat of termination from the Munich Philharmonic. The latter is not a private business. It is funded and run by the City of Munich.

What CH should not do is play the “recant or be martyred” game; that went out with Diocletian, and free speech and thought is at the core of our rights, not a peripheral afterthought.

Agreed.

“Whatever, that’s not an ok sign, racist, alphabet sexexs, for the schoolchilren. Don’t axe me again, gimme dat, wear your mask, save the dolphins “ and post it all on fakebook, instacrap, tikforyourTok.

So long , and thanks for all the fish.

What is wrong with you? Why would you think I support Putin? I support individual liberty and can clearly see where this narrative is headed when it comes to targeting the right in this country. Sad, you can’t see it.
