Exclusive Eyewitness Recounts Shooting on Alec Baldwin Movie Set: One bullet ripped through both victims

It was one bullet that discharged from the prop gun on the Santa Fe movie “Rust” and killed the director of photography and wounded the movie’s director.

An eyewitness on set tells this column that the bullet went straight through the body of DP Halyna Hutchins and into the clavicle of the film’s director Joel Souza.

Very quickly the set was locked down. Ambulance and helicopters arrived. Hutchins and Souza were sent straight to the hospital. Hutchins died en route in a helicopter.

On the ground, Baldwin was in shock but composed. He kept asking why he was handed a “hot gun.” Our eyewitness said Baldwin kept saying “In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun.”

“A hot gun” means a gun with real ammunition.

Baldwin, not knowing the fate of the victims, was taken immediately to the hospital. “He had no idea how badly they were hurt or Halyna was dead.”

Prop “guns” don’t have bullets.

Did the eyewitnesses say why Baldwin pointed the gun at the two victims and pulled the trigger?

If the bullet went right through her and hit the other guy, Baldwin fired that gun very close and right at her. Very much doubt that New Mexico cops under the control of Democrat politicos will do a real investigation of a Hollywood liberal icon like Baldwin.

Looks like a case for movie production control.

Many, many times the guns on set are real. They look better on screen, especially in closeups.

Filming a closeup could explain why both the DP and the Director were hit by the same one shot. They could have been filming a closeup of Baldwin shooting someone, and pointed his gun at the off-set camera with the director and DP standing next to it.

We can’t assume he was aiming at anyone. He was probably”aiming” at an imaginary “target” and the victims were in the line of fire.

“Prop guns” include rubber dummies for background use like in war movies and real guns that are deadly if there’s real ammo in them instead of blanks. And even blanks can kill under the right circumstances. It’s also possible a blank sent some sort of debris out the barrel. It’s happened before.

A tragedy for sure, but Baldwin is an imbecile. Every gun is loaded with live ammo until you personally confirm otherwise. If checking ammo isn’t your first choice when handed a weapon, it isn’t negligent…it’s far worse.

Wouldn’t a prop gun be a lot lighter ???

Shouldn’t he have noticed the difference as he held a heavier gun ???

Baldwin is undoubtedly a POS, but this isn’t his fault. The prop master is responsible for the gun, and the director likely had Baldwin positioned in the way that the gun was aimed at the DP. No one could have expected the gun to fire a real bullet.

As I posted on another thread, movie companies need to change procedures on such setups. Have the camera operator start rolling, then have that person and all other crew clear the line of fire before the director yells “Action!”

I’m not a lawyer, but If I were out hunting with friends, and this same thing happened, I’m quite sure many States would immediately charge me with at least 3rd degree murder, probably 2nd.

The state would say: “you are holding and operating the gun, you are 100% responsible for its safety.”

So can we assume Alec Baldwin will be charged?

This sounds just like an episode of Magnum PI (the original one with Tom Selleck)

Yes, the police should look at the prop master/armorer.

As a matter of completeness they should also check that Arec - or anyone else who had access to that gun - didn’t have a motive to kill Halyna.

Because this would be a heck of a way to murder someone.

Before I pointed and shot any kind of gun at anyone for any reason and did not want to kill or injure them I would consider it MY responsibility to ensure that it was harmless. I don’t care who handed it to me; my mother, my son, my best friend, my co-worker,...doesn’t matter.

It was Baldwins responsibility to KNOW that gun was not loaded with live ammo. There may be others who are also responsible to one degree or another but HE is the shooter!

ANY gun should be assumed to be loaded with live ammo until proven otherwise to an absolute certainty.

If there is any doubt or question, no matter how small, that the gun may be, could be loaded,... then there is no doubt it is!

There are witnesses and video. But even if Baldwin shot them as a joke, I expect the New Mexico democrats will protect Baldwin and not charge him with anything.
