Vancouver coyotes attack people in Stanley Park, bite their own tails, and biologists don’t understand why
Vancouver coyote experts are using every tactic possible – not including catapults and dynamite – to try to solve the mystery of why these animals have attacked dozens of people in Stanley Park this year.
There may not be more than a dozen coyotes living in a four-square-mile park in Vancouver, but they have provincial and city employees chasing their tails in search of answers as to why the animals are so aggressive.
At the same time, the call to rid the park of coyotes is growing louder after nearly 40 cases have been reported since December 2020 of animals biting or showing aggression toward everyone from seniors to toddlers.
Paul Curtis, a professor and wildlife expert at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., has spent decades studying coyote aggression. His research, conducted in New York City parks 15 years ago, showed that people feeding animals that are territorial cause most aggression.

Coydogs or real coyotes?
I went hiking with our pet lab Hannity, down by the river in near state park land in the SC low country. The lab had a knack for finding coyotes. Apparently, he invaded one’s territory. I heard a commotion over the hill where Hannity had run. He brought back a howling, snarling coyote. Wish he would have brought back something useful, like an attractive blond. Like your dad, I had nothing in my hands but a leash.
The coyote was following us. I walked backwards toward the car. No way I would turn my back on the varmint and invite him to take a hunk out of my backside. If he had attacked, I would have had to hit him in the head with my bare fists.
Eventually, he stopped pursuit. I never again, walked in that area without a big stick. Usually, I was CCWing.
Exactly. They have no fear. We have them in our backyard every night.
Just strap a rocket to their back and lite the fuse.
All the deer hunters here in MO shoot coyotes on site.
I’ve got two Great Pyrenees/Anatolian mix puppies that ought to be able to scare the coyotes off with their bark this year and kick their arses next year. We have meat goats but that’s our meat dammit.
How about a blue-tooth enabled flashlight and an app that translates the keypad into Morse code?

Their bark alone should keep them at bay. I have never lost any of my herd, chickens or small pets to coyotes since having the pyrs- one is 146 lbs! Our neighbor kids were taunting them, and getting their dogs to bark at them through the fence when they were puppies and I warned their parents that these are not dogs that you wanted on your bad side. They are gentle and docile but they are very protective of their charge and can easily scale a fence. My other neighbors grandchildren made friends with them and feed them treats so they love to see them.
Anyway, the neighbor with the taunting kids did not stop them and I ended up putting a tall privacy fence all the way down that side of my property line.
About the coyotes, most of my neighbors are armed and all have acreage. It is not unusual at all to hear gunshots for coyotes, foxes, bobcats, etc. Sadly, we have had a lot of woke/city/liberals moving into the area and they bemoan on Nextdoor about the “poor coyotes” - how we should trap them and set them free, etc. And the coyote population was increasing for a while. But it seems some locals had had enough and cleared out a good many of them (the coyotes, not the liberals, lol)
Whenever he spotted one, he would pull a cord inside the truck cab, dropping the doors to the kennel then it was off the races as he drove his truck across the fields in pursuit of the dogs chasing the coyote.....
His favorite dog was a specially bred mix between a greyhound and a Russian wolfhound. It was huge....
Here in Indiana any hunt you’re on becomes a coyote hunt when you see one.
Last one I had to kill was standing on my patio concrete not 10 feet from my house. When I opened the door she just trotted off like she owned the place.
Grand Pyrenees are some of my fav dogs - I don’t own any because you need a shopvac just to clean up their hair though.
They will kill coyotes easily.
I wouldn’t have one as an indoor dog. The male I have could be in TV commercials or on a dog food bag he’s so good looking.
Coyotes are like people; too much prosperity is ruinous. This reminds me of when a crocodile or shark attacks and the “experts” are totally baffled as to why it happened. After, animals really just love us like we love them. Right? They would NEVER think of us as a source of food!
Or the new enviro-aware paint on rock faces no longer permits rapid tunnel withdrawal passage.
