What do you suppose the chances are that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken thinks the U.S. abandonment of Afghanistan — the “handover to the Taliban,” as Former U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker put it the other day — is a good idea? “None” would be my guess. What do you suppose the chances are that you could find more than 5 people at the Pentagon, the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency and the National Security Council who think the “handover” is a good idea? My guess would be “none” as well.
Handing over Afghanistan to the Taliban is President Biden’s idea, if that’s the right word, and his alone. It is terrible policy, on any number of levels. “Worse than a crime, a mistake” (Talleyrand’s phrase) describes it best.
Axios reports that the Administration “derives comfort from the fact that the American public is behind them — an overwhelming majority support withdrawal from Afghanistan — and they bet they won’t be punished politically for executing a withdrawal.”
Given events and the likely consequences, the fact that the Administration “derives comfort” from anything regarding its decision to hand over Afghanistan to the Taliban is nauseous. That they’re “betting” they will escape political punishment is perhaps more so. What we’re witnessing, in real time, on the BBC and CNN and on the websites of the world’s great news organizations is the Taliban’s reimagining of The Killing Fields. Mullah Pol Pot comes to Kabul in a Toyota pick-up truck. Prepare your 13-year-old daughters for “marriage.”

How did the IC miss this? How did the IC miss the Covid debacle that started in China around September, 2019? How did the IC miss the dangers of having almost 100% of our PPE and pharmaceuticals made in China? How is the IC missing the fact that most of the batteries for electrical vehicles are made and will be made in China?
How did the Military’s top Generals miss all the above? Ditto for the State Department? It seems only Trump and his team know what the heck is going on and willing to do what needs to be done.
Don’t get me started on the Southern Border. As far as I am concerned we need to Defund DC. DC incompetence is an existential threat to the survival of this country.
Biden’s Folly is Biden’s funding.
“What do you suppose the chances are that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken thinks the U.S. abandonment of Afghanistan...”
Blinken said recently that “we aren’t leaving, we’re staying, the embassy is staying...”
Biden said 300,000 highly trained and American armed Afghani troops wouldn’t have trouble handling 75,000 ragtag Taliban.

Either lying or clueless, take your pick
Mr. Ellis is assuming that the people at CIA, Pentagon, DHS, etc, are on America’s side. The evidence is that they are not. Almost all of them are probably compromised and working for China. No other nation has had as many spies from a single other nation as we have from China.
It’s Obama’s policy, not Biden’s.
I remember reading numerous reports from the American military personnel who were trying to train the Afghani troops.
They said repeatedly that most of the Afghanis were not trustworthy. They either lacked the will to fight, were too stupid, or most likely were Taliban sympathizers who hate us and want the American presence out of the country.
Looks like the trainers were right.
What a joke. I stopped reading right there.
Blinken is a nitwit. Who knows what he thinks?
In the next few DAYS??? https://t.co/Zt6R3JlfSF— Jeff Carlson (@themarketswork) August 15, 2021
I'll take clueless, although he reflexively lies too.
How many incidences were there of Afghan trainees turning on American troops and other Afghans?! More than several....
You know who’s really quiet right now? The bush clan. The Cheneys. Bill Kristol and his merry band of neocons. Funny that. They have been so vocal in their criticism of Trump, yet seem to have lost their tongues of late.
