Normally August and early September are when sport shooters and hunters head to the range to prepare for the upcoming season, but this year that could be a problem.
Firearms sales have remained strong this summer, dipping only slightly from last year’s record-breaking sales, but the problem is that ammunition has continued to remain in short supply.
“Everything is difficult right now,” Dave Larsen, manager of Doug’s Shoot’n Sports of Taylorsville, Utah, told local news channel KUTV.

Locally, I’m seeing a lot of .22, 9mm,7.62X39,.223, 5.56, and .308, but anything else is pretty rare. I had been toying with the idea of picking a rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, but I’m glad I didn’t because I haven’t seen a single box of ammo on the shelf in the last 18 months.
Online I’m seeing .223 brass jacket plinking ammo for around .79 cent a round in bulk.
Steel jacket even cheaper but I refuse to run that in my AR.
Not me. I loaded up a hundred 185gr Nosler Partitions a couple of years ago.

Just go to the street corner in the downtown area of your town. They’ve got plenty.

Playing the drop I see. Or maybe going over tree. Or maybe flying over one buck to kill the bigger buck behind it. Either way, you are good!
In my area the bow hunters are seen as much more ethical than the gun hunters.
I’ve seen more ammo at better prices in the last month than I have in the last year.
Can I get me a huntin’ ammo here?
Must not hunt hogs or live in state that issues many deer tags.
I have heard that in places they are.
It is probably true.
But it is not in the areas I hunt or have hunted. The gun hunters are the ones who seem to recover their deer, while many bow hunters will “Lose” a deer once they realize it is small.
I could tell you stories of deer I have found. The worst was doe with two arrows in her gut. Two
me too
Good. I hate bow season for the exact reason you cited
In the mid-Atlantic, it’s about $35.00 for 50 count of 9mm. Sort of insane.
One example: 50 count of 9mm still as high as $50.00 in some local northern Virginia gun stores.
Nope. I think surplus FMJ ammo would be fine for hogs, though.
I've rediscovered the .22 so I don't feel like I'm sending my retirement downrange. I had set a Ruger 22/45 up with an IR laser for shooting rabbits with my nods at night, but started using it as a trainer once ammo went crazy.
I've trained pistol a lot, but I'll tell you what; I wish I discovered the .22 pistol even before the shortage. Best training gun I.have.ever.had. for so many reasons, not the least of which being able to shoot it all day long cheap.
Wouldn’t real men at least use a recurve?
This search will show all the new ammo deals. There are a few 5.56 for ~.50 cents a round

Something ain’t right with that pic. Right hand bow drawing with the left arm.
