1996 was an election year.
Happened in July, four months before election day.
I’m sure politics had nothing to do with the coverup.

Lol. I can’t believe this theory still floats around. I rarely post on Free Republic anymore, but the TWA 800 threads used to provide me with hours of entertainment.
In 1996 there were no subs equipped with surface to air missiles. There most likely still aren’t. It kind of defeats the whole stealthiness of a sub being underwater. Here’s a relatively recent article on subs and surface to air missiles. Takes all the fun out of a good conspiracy theory. But it won’t detract the “experts” who have never spent a day on a sub, flown a large commercial aircraft, or actually been involved in an accident investigation.
Navy missiles go missing all the time - there’s no system in place to account for any ordnance at all. Sometimes the Safe/Arm switches mysteriously arm themselves on warshots. Navy missiles are also semi-active.

Everyone flying to Atlanta in a couple weeks for the 96 Olympics. Billy Jeff up for election in a couple months. Plenty of reason to cover up.
And the following week the Atlanta bombing…..quite a month.

The hole blown into the side was shown on the piece they recovered, while it was still hanging from the attachment lines, on CNN, we were watching the news live, a whole room of us, someone ran up to the screen and said, "There is the hole" pointing to the hole in the section recovered, about the size of a 4 X 8 sheet, with a neat hole, perhaps 6-8 inches diameter, the edges blown inwards.
THe hole was nearer to the top of the section as it was hanging on the recovery lines as it swung over the water.
That piece was never shown again..
Dole was actually pulling within stiking distance, and the bent one did not want the embarrassment to cause an election loss.
After 9/11 I wondered if Flight 800 was the target of a 9/11-type hijacking, and was shot down deliberately by the Navy to prevent it from being deliberately crashed into a high-value target.
From friends in the air safety investigation business:
1/ NTSB got chased off by the FBI
2/ What they say happened - didn’t
3/ You’ll never know what happened
4. The American public is always satisfied by half-assed explanations
Didn’t they recently destroy the plane?
The corporate media was complicit
And OJ was flying the plane.....
I believe it was the USS Wyoming on sea trials that had the fatal shootdown accident, and both the captain and exec officer were relieved of their commands.
It seems to me that the USA has never really recovered from the corruption of the Clinton years. Vincent Foster, Ron Brown, and TWA-800 were a Clinton trifecta of scandals, and the mass media did their best to support and participate in the coverups.
The coverup was to abate fears just before the opening of the Summer Olympic Games.
I am certain the U.S. Navy accidentally shot down TWA 800. The FBI interviewed 700 witnesses but claimed they did not see what they saw. The FBI seized the investigation from the NTSB which is the agency required by federal law to investigate airliner crashes. Two Air National Guard helicopter pilots were airborne in the area and saw the missile. They publicly said so until they were ordered silenced.

It was a terrorist attack close to the time of the election. Had to cover up or Clinton would have lost. The terrorists used a laser guided anti-aircraft missile. Possibly Swedish design.
