Um, okay, that's, that's, uh, interesting.

Amazing. I’d have never pegged Curtis as the “crazy cat lady” type. Different strokes for different folks, I guess...

Every single cat was slated to be euthanized by the city’s embattled Animal Care Center but were rescued and nursed back to health by Sliwa and his wife.
I don't know much about Curtis Sliwa, but he has my utmost respect for this. I know most FReepers are dog people, but in my humble opinion there is no better friend than a cat.

Doesn’t New York City have zoning ordinances on how many animals you can keep?

I always liked Curtis but he struck me as kind of weird...an apartment full of cats doesn’t change my opinion of the guy.

I read the article, I know!, & it said it was 750 sq. feet. I admire him & his wife. All of ours are rescues too. Never realized how good looking he is ; )

James Earl Ray’s wife is arrested for animal cruelty for having a house full of dogs she couldn’t take care of. Curtis Sliwa and wife own 15 cats in a 320 sq.ft. apartment and are the central feature of a big story now that he’s a mayoral candidate.
The cynic in me says the media wants the reader to conflate the two: Sliwa is unelectable for being a crazy cat person.

Gawd. We have five cats in our house, which is over ten times the size of his 'apartment' (closet). Between the shedding, horking, drooling, spitting up, and two litter boxes, it's a footrace to keep abreast of the little buggers, cleanliness-wise (and cat turds smell worse than dogs, even with clumping, scented cat litter, FYI). I can't imagine fifteen of them in a room barely bigger than my living room. Then there's the proximity of the wife issue, too. I mean, I love my wife, but I'd be grabbing a couple fishing poles, and heading out the door to the lake more often than I do (or should), you betcha.

I love my little guy - right now he’s sleeping with his cheek on my cheek - but 15 of them? That would be like having giant rodents wandering around.

This is probably just part of his post-SHTF plan. Once it happens, he’s goes from being a cat-owner to a rancher since cat is the other white meat. I just hope he has some recipes printed out.

Sliwa and his wife are providing a public service by being kitty foster parents and sparing the taxpayers the cost of euthanasias at public animal shelters.
Other folks have weirder and less-useful hobbies, believe me.
Besides, taking care of the furry felines probably keeps Curt's wife happy and occupied while he's off doing his politikin' for mayor.
