(vanity - sort of) BARF - Juneteenth nonsense
me | 6/18/21 | me

OK, so this is mostly just a blowing-off-steam thread. (PLEASE feel free to post your steam!)

I'm disgusted by this nonsense. This is nothing but a "stick it to white Americans" ploy. Another childish, babyish action with zero background. Suddenly some local-yokel thing even blacks didn't know about is a national celebration.

When I kept hearing fireworks tonight around our neighborhood, it finally occurred to me it's probably about "Juneteenth"!

“It didn’t end slavery in the US. That took the Thirteenth amendment, slave states that stayed in the Union (the polite phrase is “Border States”) were allowed to keep the slaves they held”

Of course they were ‘allowed to keep slaves’. Until the 13th Amendment there was no Constitutional mechanism available to end slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation not only didn’t apply to slaves in Union states, it didn’t apply to slaves in Confederate territory that was under Union control at the time of the E.C. The Proclamation itself carefully lists the counties and parishes where it didn’t apply.

I confess, I do not know how many slaves the 13th Amendment actually freed. Most Union slave states had abolished slavery before its effective date, but maybe not all.

Slavery didn’t officially end in the Cherokee Nation until July 27, 1866.

Stevie Ray Vaughn, John Lee Hooker, Peppermint Harris, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Albert Collins, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Professor Longhair, Big Mama Thornton, Arnett Cobb, and others joined together to celebrate Juneteenth back in the 1970s.

They have Kwanza, we have Christmas.
They have Juneteenth, we have Independence Day.
All we have to do now is have an alternative Thanksgiving and the holiday segregation will be complete.

Last April 20, I met a lady who was going to the downtown area of my city. She asked me, “Do you know what holiday I am celebrating today?” Without hesitation I said, “Sure, Adolf Hitler’s birthday.” Which is true; Hitler was born on April 20, 1889. That certainly changed her perspective of a certain marijuana-based holiday.

Ann Coulter has had 7 opinion pieces about Kwanzaa titled, Happy Kwanzaa! The Holiday Brought to You by the FBI

Use to find the list of Granger's Orders at Galveston, but google now limits it to only Order #3 in search.

Freeing slaves in Texas was not number 1, taking possession of Texas cotton was either #1 or #2.

I thought Kwanzaa was only celebrated by white liberals with guilty consciences. Myself, I have yet to hear a black person admit he or she observes it. As for me, I can’t get very excited about a tradition that is younger than me.

Celebrate Juneteenth if you want, just don’t call it the end of legal slavery in the United States. It was only the end of legal slavery in Texas. Legal slavery in the United States did not end until six months later when the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution was announced on December 18, 1865.

During the intervening six months, most of the remaining slave holding states outlawed slavery but not all of them. Of all people, Joe Biden should know better. His home state of Delaware was one of the hold outs along with Kentucky.

So, the date that should be celebrated nationally is either December 6, 1865 when the requisite number of states finally ratified the Thirteenth Amendment or December 18, 1865 when the amendment was declared a part of the Constitution.

We need to take this away from the left and claim it ourselves.

Fantastic idea. Celebrate Republicanism. They make blacks people in the USA. Spin that.

Also there is no mention of the former slaves who petitioned to go back into slavery. They were not able to support themselves, they didn’t know how to farm, they didn’t know how to grow their own food. They had been fed and sheltered and the end of slavery was difficult.

Remind them of the Christian white men who put an end to slavery. Remind them of the Muslims who still hold slaves while you’re at it.

Do you recall their plea? “Think of our children!” My Mom said they should have thought of their children before they betrayed our country.

Government employees would celebrate Adolf Hitler’s birthday if it meant a day off work with full pay.
