OK, so this is mostly just a blowing-off-steam thread. (PLEASE feel free to post your steam!)
I'm disgusted by this nonsense. This is nothing but a "stick it to white Americans" ploy. Another childish, babyish action with zero background. Suddenly some local-yokel thing even blacks didn't know about is a national celebration.
When I kept hearing fireworks tonight around our neighborhood, it finally occurred to me it's probably about "Juneteenth"!
So early this week the stupid local pub(l)ic schools posted about Juneteenth:
"In alignment with the recent federal action making Juneteenth a federal holiday, the Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano announce that Howard County Public School System schools and offices will be closed on Friday, June 18, 2021. This is consistent with state and county government announcements regarding closures. Summer meals are not served on Fridays. State athletics contests will occur as scheduled. Saturday, June 19 is Juneteenth, a national commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. HCPSS calls on everyone to recognize the historic pain of deeply embedded injustices, and to join us in celebrating the racial diversity that is a cherished aspect of our school system and community."
Further, of course our community college smug arrogant sanctimonious wench of a president had to chime in:
"Juneteenth is the celebration that observes June 19th, 1865, as the enforced end of slavery in the United States. On that date, Union troops entered the state of Texas to force the liberation of enslaved people—a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had freed African Americans held in slavery in a territory that was in rebellion. That it took a full two years is a tragic commentary on the persistence of racism and oppression against people of color then and now. Please take time to reflect on how far we have come as a nation and here at HCC on racial equity, and yet we also must recognize how much work remains to be done to ensure freedom and equity for all. To learn more about the significance the history of Juneteenth, I am sharing this link to the Smithsonian Natural Museum of African American History and Culture. HCC has strived to become an institution that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. May this day serve as a beacon of light to our future that will shine on generations to come, and, as a college, we stand in its light and reaffirm our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion."
I'm so sick of these sanctimonious America-hating bastards.
Take a deep breath ; hold it; then exhale.
Southern blacks along the Gulf Coast have observed this time for many years, and I have heard about it on the radio since 2000.
That wasn’t fireworks you heard, probably Black on Black homicide being committed, especially in DemoRat controlled cities.
The Holiday itself is good, it’s the Marxists co-opting a holiday about freedom to advance there poison that is bad.
I carefully read the two school proclamations you posted. There was no mention that the slaveholders were Democrat. And no mention that the troops who freed the slaves were Republican, and were lead by a Republican president.
I guess that was just an oversight.
About 20 yrs ago, me and my family went on vacation to a nearby state park. It was shocking. We were the only white people there amongst many hundreds. There was loud music at night, much drinking, and blacks having sex in public.
Now we have gone there before mind you. However, this was the first we witnessed this. All weekend, we were not messed with and actually had a good time.
Come Monday, I mentioned my experience at work. They all laughed.
Then said, “You didn’t know this was juneteenth weekend”? I was bumfuzzled. Never heard if it (Texas transplant).
That is my venting on our new Federal Holiday!
I love Juneteenth. It’s the perfect Woke Holiday.
“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”
That’s the inconveniently unwoke actual order issued.
It didn’t end slavery in the US. That took the Thirteenth amendment, slave states that stayed in the Union (the polite phrase is “Border States”) were allowed to keep the slaves they held, about 450k according to an 1860 census (although I’d wager it was less when it ended) for about another seven months.
Once, or if, this woke thing ever passes, Juneteenth will be Summer Kwanza.
If the left gets the election laws they want, it’ll replace the Fourth of July in a few years.
Must be a Louisiana thing.
Are u native....
I’m Mississippi and we didn’t have it in Pass Christian
I was part raised in Tensas Parish near Bruinsburg
I ever heard of it till race pimps started it....
Juneteenth was a fine, fun and legitimate American celebration that arose naturally among Americans.
These criminals illegitimately holding offices are usurping and perverting it.

Not so fast NeoCon

My insurance agent with a major company was closed today due to this. And my bill was due.
I have never seen or heard Juneteenth fireworks and this goes back to me observing Junteenth celebrations over 30 years time.
>>Saturday, June 19 is Juneteenth, a national commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.
THIS is false.
It does NOT mark national end of slavery in the US.
Ask Joe Biden to explain while Deleware still held slaves SIX months after Juneteenth and 3 years after the Emancipation proclamation.
I heard it most of my life, Texan here.
>>”Juneteenth is the celebration that observes June 19th, 1865, as the enforced end of slavery in the United States.
Nope. Certain more northern states kept their slaves as did American Indians.
It marks the date in TEXAS in 1965 when a public notice was made 2 months after the end of the Civil War.
>>Please take time to reflect on how far we have come as a nation and here at HCC on racial equity, and yet we also must recognize how much work remains to be done to ensure freedom and equity for all.
This was how my employer put it last year: “Spend this time reflecting”.
It was a celebration of freedom and a picnic day.

Just make sure to emphasize “This is when Republicans ended Democrat slavery!”
When I lived in Florida, I had neighbors who would shoot off their 4th of July fireworks this early. You may be hearing fireworks now because the fireworks stands are now open and some people can’t wait to use them.
