Welcome to our ongoing coverage of the Minnesota murder trial of Derek Chauvin, over the in-custody death of George Floyd. I am Attorney Andrew Branca for Law of Self Defense, providing guest commentary and analysis of this trial for Legal Insurrection.
With the trial set to begin with opening arguments on Monday, March 29 at 9:00am CT, the court finally managed to select 15 jurors effective yesterday. Only 14 of these will actually be sworn in and seated on Monday morning—if all 15 chosen show up, one of them will be sent home. The court’s given no indication on the process to be used to choose the 15th unnecessary juror—it may simply be whoever shows up last on Monday.
In any case, I thought I’d take the opportunity to collect what we know of the jurors, both in aggregate and individually, here in a single blog post, along with brief descriptions of the jurors as shared by the court and media, including their gender and race. The descriptions of the jurors are sourced from USA Today, as well as from my own notes taken during voir dire.)...

One of the jurors (#9) claims she voted in the hopes of getting a jury summons to be on this case.
How can she be allowed to be on the jury? No one who actively seeks to be a juror on a specific trial is unbiased.
The jury appears to be very representative of the area.
This is a show trial. The verdict has been decided. At the very least, he’ll get life. If not, they’ll burn the city down, (I wish they would).
“One of the jurors (#9) claims she voted in the hopes of getting a jury summons to be on this case. How can she be allowed to be on the jury? No one who actively seeks to be a juror on a specific trial is unbiased.”
Agreed.
I would not trust the media to keep my name and address secret if I were asked to be a juror on this case.
They know actual punishment for Doxxing is unlikely if you are a Liberal. Everyone now knows this.
Here in the Twin Cities, a local legal analyst said on TV that given the overall demographic make-up of the jury, he gives a slight edge to the prosecution.
“I would not trust the media to keep my name and address secret if I were asked to be a juror on this case.”
I worry less about the media than I do about the random county court clerk who makes an “administrative mistake” and releases the names of the jurors or who slips those names to the wrong groups like BLM.
Q. So when you first received your jury notice, what was your initial reaction?
A. I was super excited.
Q. Excited?
A. Yeah. That’s actually why I voted.
Q. Ah.
A. So I was really surprised when I heard — got back feedback right away. I was really — yeah, I was really excited. I didn’t know what it was. I didn’t care what it was. I was just excited to be summoned.
First thing I thought of too.
Defense must have left her on the jury for appeal ammunition.
Deal is, I think he walks if they simply demonstrate that he and the other officers were following the Minneapolis PD policies and procedures for the situation.
“Defense must have left her on the jury for appeal ammunition.”
It may not be wise for an attorney to take the gamble that his client will spend several years in prison simply to find another attorney to argue before an appeals court that you were incompetent during voir dire.
“Here in the Twin Cities, a local legal analyst said on TV that given the overall demographic make-up of the jury, he gives a slight edge to the prosecution.”
Also in the Twin Cities here. The attorney analyst on radio
who has attended all the court proceedings and reports each morning says the deck is completely stacked against Chauvin.
Supposed to be representative of the accused.
“Supposed to be representative of the accused.”
I think many defendants would prefer that their juries were all of the same gender, race and income group as themselves, that is typically not the case.
Trial begins just before summer, making it more convenient for the rioters who will be burning down buildings and attacking random Whites.
No matter the results....There will be riots. It’s what they do. Idolize criminals.
“Accountant, has a 6-month old Bernese Mountain Dog...” In over a decade as a trial lawyer, I don’t think I’ve ever asked a potential juror about his dogs.
Yep! If I were in his shoes I would seek asylum in some undisclosed but very nice eastern European country and change my name to Lubomir Sergeyovich Konovalov....or something!
That ‘local legal analyst” may be local, but he’s not a real analyst! If stupid white liberals didn;t believe their own lies, this situation would not have occurred in the first place!
There will always be something else with this group. You can count on that.
