A pileup just north of downtown Fort Worth has been deemed a “mass casualty event” by officials early Thursday morning.
The major crash was first reported around roughly 6 a.m., and the highway remains closed in that area as officials work to clear the scene. At least five people have died in the pileup, according to the Associated Press. Up to 100 cars were involved in the crashes. Police said dozens were hospitalized for treatment.
Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Mike Drivdahl said authorities were going to each vehicle to assess medical needs after the “mass casualty incident” involving tractor-trailers and other vehicles on Interstate 35. The freeway will be closed all day “to remove vehicles one by one,” he said. The official cause of the crash has not been determined, as officials prepare for a lengthy investigation, but there were several reports of black ice earlier in the morning throughout North Texas. One of our readers in Texas sends us a video that shows how the massive pileup started.

Thirty-six people have been taken to hospitals with varying degrees of injuries, according to the spokesman. Authorities had to use the Jaws of Life to pry open vehicles and free those trapped inside them.
First responders said there are still some cars wedged underneath other vehicles, causing some of the uncertainty around how many causalities there are, but they added there are some fatalities still likely on the scene and it could take some time to reach the bodies.
A video from the aftermath of the pileup:
First responder teams sent 14 ambulances and an ambulance bus to the scene to provide onsite care. The crash was declared a “mass casualty” event. Officials said they had used the bus to keep victims from developing hypothermia as well.
The weather has been horrible and truck drivers are unbelievably irresponsible; they drive way too damn fast and generally I dislike traffic laws but they really need to crack down on this.
I know it takes a lot longer for a truck to stop than a car, but it looked like the driver didn’t even try to stop.
Driving around DFW under the best conditions a nightmare death trap.
Something was wrong before the FedEx truck showed up.
Most of the time in these types of icy conditions, people are following too close and their traveling too fast for existing conditions. It’s not too complex.
There was a flare out and he did not even appear to slow down.
Well, there are going to be a few FedEx deliveries running late.
In all seriousness, praying for those involved! God Bless!
That will do it.
That’s why cars have a sensor that warns you when outside temps hit 37 degrees, slow down, roads can ice. Nothing worse than ice.
The vehicles on top of the car hauler look completely untouched. Unfortunately they didn’t have passengers in them.
Well there's one package that's not going to get there on time.
Interestingly, the asshat holding the camera escapes critique for his rubbernecking.
Aside from all the reckless drivers - many of whom have outside temperature indicators in their vehicles - I despise rubberneckers the most.
When I drive, I keep my eyes on the road ahead, occasionally checking my rear view.
I’m hauling an RV to Florida this summer and dread I-95 because too many just don’t pay attention to driving.
As if texting weren’t bad enough, I witnessed someone with a newspaper spread out across their steering wheel a few months back.
“Most of the time in these types of icy conditions, people are following too close and their traveling too fast for existing conditions.”
Yep. Most of the time people are following too close and traveling too fast - period. It has gotten worse over the last 10 years or so.
If it is black ice, there is no way to stop in that distance. Bad stuff.
It only takes one cranked-up semi driver. And there are a lot more than one out there.
We had a big pile up in the Salt Lake area years ago. The weather was freezing with overnight fog creating a lot of black ice. There was highway Patrolman and a news cameraman standing there filming the cars driving by and recording the sounds of the crashes. Visibility was such that you could see maybe 100 feet. Over 100 cars piled up. You could see them fly by at 60mph in that fog, not slowing down one bit. The fog was so dense that the red/blue lights on the patrol cars couldn’t be seen far.
Idiots buy SUVs and all-reason tires and think that they don’t have to slow down in the freezing wet.
“but it looked like the driver didn’t even try to stop.”
ICE!!!!
