Why the Glock 19? Modern polymer materials combined with more consistent action and superior corrosion resistance simply performed better than SIG’s all-metal design.
Navy SEALSs and SIG:
After the United States military shifted away from the iconic albeit somewhat aged M1911A1 to the more modern Beretta M9 in 1985, Navy SEALs decided to go in a different direction, opting to carry the SIG Sauer P226, which was dubbed Mk 25 in SEAL service.

Link is broken.
Link worked for me.
worked for me.
Never owned one but my brother in law did. Shot it a few times at the range....LOVED IT.
Which is true.
"But 17 rounds of 9mm is superior 7 rounds of 45 auto"
Which is also true. XD
My Sig P320 RX has all the advantages of the Glock 19, with great optics and after market trigger.
It’s working now, strange. The DNS wasn’t resolving the name when I tried a few minutes ago.
I love mine. So much I bought the 17 model also.
All truisms, which is why I chose the 40 SW.
Starts with a 4, better penetration velocity and energy than 9 or 45 in similarcsized platforms.
My edc is either a G27 with 2 extra mags for 31 rnds of 180 hps, or a SW40 and three 15 rnd mag for 45 total.
I may only need a few but too much available is never unwise.
Regarding the selection of arms in the services, bureaucrats do that. Users generally have little say.
The thing is, I really like the Glock, nearly fanboy level. But the practical side of me says "If you do something (shoot, drive, cook, whatever) better with certain equipment, you should be using that equipment." The problem is all me, I still love the Glock (gave it to my son) but I now carry a S&W M&P Shield.
IMHO the Glock 19 is the best all-around handgun available today. Like the watch commercial from long ago boasted: It keeps right on ticking.
“But 17 rounds of 9mm is superior 7 rounds of 45 auto”
Only if you have 8 or more guys to drop. :)
“Regarding the selection of arms in the services, bureaucrats do that. Users generally have little say.”
It was ever thus.
I bought a G-19 last week. Shot my buddy’s G-17 and loved it. The 19 is like the 17 with just a slightly smaller frame and easier to conceal carry.
I have 16+1 of .40 in an XDM. It is a bit on the large size.
The 9mm Hellcat Springfield at 11+1 might be an option in a smaller size.
(With the ammo situation, I’ll have to ask my son for some.)
I have both and also love them. Have a Glock21, too. My only problem is that I STILL haven’t become comfortable with that “trigger mounted safety” stuff. I just will never feel that’s a ‘safety.’
Other than that, they are all fine, reliable shooters (if you don’t limp-wrist them.)
Practical, sound advice. Which why certain SW operators were allowed sometime ago and perhaps even today to carry their choice.
One often thinks of the older movie about British troops in Africa whose perimeter was being overrun at several points. The quartermaster made them line up behind the wagon and was parceling out small amounts of ammo one at a time and taking names to keep the records straight.
Lol. Same here. I wanted to use it as my carry gun but I carry with one in the chamber. If I need to use it then I need it now and no time to rack a round. And with no manual safety I don’t quite feel safe. I carry behind my back and don’t want a accidental new butt crack. But they are so hyper accurate right out of the box.
That 21 is a tough one to master, according to a friend.
