Archaeologists in Florida recently confirmed that they discovered the bones of many young children buried under the last place that one might have thought to look: a wine store.
However, there will be no police investigation. The Florida wine shop is in St. Augustine, the oldest city in America. And those bones? And those bones? Theyâre just about as old as the city is.

Original Florida Man
Dead white people....obviously racists.....
Really cool story though....wonder if they can run DNA on the bones and try to trace lineage to current folk?.
Bones of young children? Did St Augustine have a laundry for wayward young girls run by Irish nuns back then?
The spanish settlers left after the evil Brits took over .
The Brits were savages and would all have left .
killed there ..
Drake and his lot were evil .

Sadly, childhood mortality was horrible until the last 150 years or so, and still takes a heavy toll in places like Latin America, Sub-Sahara Africa and Central Asia.
To lose a child is just devastating. My children are grown up now, but I still worry for them.
We got a thing about burying folks in watering holes down here. Lol

Wine shop?
Nah, it’s a pizza shop.
Drake only killed the males though
That Irish nun story seemed like an anti-Catholic hit piece to me. I know nuns who take care of orphans. It’s not unusual for them to be in rough shape when they arrive.
You’re right but child mortality was high even a 100 years ago in this country. The last time a sitting President lost a child was only about 60 years ago. We need to be grateful for the health care this country has.
St.Augustine is the oldest city in the US
The powers that be keep it as pristine historically as they can.....
...even as a tourist attraction through many years it never got gaudy or embarrassing.
We go there often....
...it still retains that Olde World feel..
It use to be the ‘watering hole’ for the rich and famous......Henry Flagler built a beautiful hotel for them....
.....which now is used as Flagler College
There is even a replica of the Alhambra ( Spain) ....a millionaire built it for his private use
Fort de Soto is circa 1900’s
And there’s a Native American cemetery from the 1500’s nearby....
....so yes I believe there are bones from early times....
....as many diseases were around then.....esp tropical
My former boss is a descendent of the Basque Horruitiner family whose house you can still visit in St. Augustine. When the Spanish lost control his family went to Cuba with many, if not most of the rest, although they wound up back in Florida in 1961 thanks to Fidel.
I wanted to know the DNA as well but a quick look for the study hasn’t revealed any results. This find is from 2017.
I found this from Smithsonian mag -
“During the first week of digging in February, archeologists first discovered an intact adult skeleton and an adult skull nearby. According to Susan Parker at The St. Augustine Register, the bodies have been preliminarily identified as a relatively young white European woman and a man of African ancestry. Outside of the wine shop, they found a leg bone and another skull from two other graves. Last week, they discovered the remains of the children.
Though the remains have not been fully analyzed, a bioarcheologist believes the children were all under 7 years old. “

I was thinking the bodies could also include local Indians.
Probably some relatives in Cuba and also Puerto Rico (both Spanish settled) but Spain also owned large parts of the SE US for a long period of time....Many stayed and current Americans can trace their ancestry to them.....
Regardless, it would be interesting to trace that DNA.....
Isn’t Key West the San Francisco/Fire Island Of Florida
It was the time I drove down there, expecting to have a Jimmy Buffet song kind of vacation, and instead it was fag central.
Oh, great. Another “archeology” blog. Another brand new “one of” hit and run poster pimping the blog in clickbait form. Great. Just in time for the next FReepathon. Need those donations to support our next wave of spam bots. Pony up, everybody!
