Sadly, childhood mortality was horrible until the last 150 years or so, and still takes a heavy toll in places like Latin America, Sub-Sahara Africa and Central Asia.
To lose a child is just devastating. My children are grown up now, but I still worry for them.
That Irish nun story seemed like an anti-Catholic hit piece to me. I know nuns who take care of orphans. It’s not unusual for them to be in rough shape when they arrive.
