That’s inaccurate Burt...very actually

Drakes raid destroyed early St Augustine structures and lthere were casualties on both sides and the raid caused Spain to abandon its settlements in the Carolinas further north

But Spain stayed in Saint Augustine till 1821 except for 1763-1783 when the Brits held it briefly

The famous fort was built late 1600s

Privateer Drake was no saint but neither were the Spanish or French

The French also vied fo take this Matanzas River outlet and fought the Spanish with brutal religious overtones given the times

Probably some relatives in Cuba and also Puerto Rico (both Spanish settled) but Spain also owned large parts of the SE US for a long period of time....Many stayed and current Americans can trace their ancestry to them.....

My understanding is when the Spanish gave up on Florida, they and many of the pre-Seminole natives left for Cuba.

Regardless, it would be interesting to trace that DNA.....

Yep. as another poster mentioned, some decedents of those who went to Cuba returned to Florida courtesy of Castro.

“I was thinking the bodies could also include local Indians”

Only if they had converted to Christianity......

The burial ground was considered consecrated soil.....

I doubt they would have been in St. Augustine otherwise. The Spanish had set up a series of missions in Florida most of which were inhabited by local Indians. These missions have been the subject of some recent archeology. If I recall correctly the English drove most of the natives out and handed over the land to their allies the Seminoles.

When I was a lot younger I remember Florida being called “God’s waiting room”.
