Giant five stories deep sinkhole threatens population of New Port Richey, Florida

The crater just keeps getting bigger. The big sink hole in Pasco County just keeps growing, expanding and collapsing.

The depression in New Port Richey, Florida continues to expand at a rapid rate, very unusual for geologists.

The hole opened on Monday at a few-feet deep but has grown to 50 – 75 feet deep and more than 30 feet wide!

“The speed of it opening and the speed of it still spreading, that makes it unusual,” said Emergency Management Director Andrew Fossa.

Nearby, The Varsity Club has been evacuated and shut down. County crews erected a fence around the depression Wednesday night to protect the public.

2 geologists will be out in the area tomorrow morning to determine what’s going to happen with the deep crater.

Meanwhile, emergency crews still hear water gurgling at the bottom of the sinkhole, which means it might not stop growing anytime soon.

I'll say..geologists are usually well-balanced. Maybe some Zoloft will help

Seriously,....is this a significant water pipe leaking onto soft soil which over years flushes soil deeper into an aquafer leaving a void ? Or mother nature tricks of a larger scale down below ? Florida’s soil type seems prone to sinkholes.

My curious mind wants to know.

Sinkholes have been FATAL here in Florida and this area. The geology is such that the sinkhole develops from below and remains unseen. In 2013 a man was sleeping in his bedroom when a 20 foot wide sinkhole opened up underneath and he fell into it. His body was never recovered and even when they filled in that sinkhole with tons of fill, it reopened a couple of years later and needed more fill.

Florida has sinkholes. Many lakes began as sinkholes.

“...geologists are usually well-balanced.”

You must not know many geologists. Actually, I thought the sentence was referring to expansion, and I have known some geologists who expanded at a rapid rate after taking desk jobs.

I think the safest course is to just move to Agartha. No sinkholes there.

While sinkholes can be generated by a water pipe underground leak, most are a natural phenomena due to the fact that the Florida Peninsula is almost all limestone. Limestone can be disolved over time by the high water-table and create an underground void. Eventually that void gets filled or the surface subsides into it.

If you look at a map of central Florida, you will see a LOT of circular lakes, big and small. That is the results of this process over a lot of years.

Florida is well known for its sinkhole problem. They're usually caused by improperly burying trees, brush, and other debris during the land-clearing phase of subdivision construction. The vegetation rots, leaving a giant cavity behind that erodes with every rainfall.

My Dad (rest his soul) lived in New Port Richey and we visited him a couple times a year. These ambulance-chasing lawyer billboards were all over the place:

I looked up the location on the map. It is right on the inside of the gulf. The gulf is always getting hurricanes, it’s a large body of water and seeps into the edges of Florida. I’m not surprised there are sinkholes there. Florida is one big vast water soaked peace of land. I would’ve live in Florida for all the tea in China. Well, that is my rant anyway/
