I got a call from my son in Calif about 1 pm Tuesday. He was listening to police scanner.. said a fire was coming my way... didn't make sense, this area has never had a fire. It's the city!
I went outside in our beautiful peaceful Sr. retirement village to a bank of thick smoke and saw a raging fire. It seemed 10 miles away. The wind was whipping in every direction and took me off my feet several times.
I've been through this before living in the woods of No. Calif. I was prepared then. This home was in the city... I prepared for that. Not for this.
I immediately ran to the neighbors homes to warn them. They mocked me. No one would budge. I tried to water my house and house next door who were gone camping. NO one ever warned anyone. There was NOTHING on local radio and TV. NOTHING.
Was I being silly? I am disabled and in pain, not to mention being 70 years old and weighing 95 lbs. So I decided to grab Bugs the cat and what I needed for 2 or 3 days of evacuation. The cat can't go to a shelter. I was met with a 4 lane wall of evacuees when I tried to get on the main street. It took me 5 hours to drive 25 miles. Finally spent the night in the car in a parking lot in Rogue River, Oregon, then drove to a friends where I can stay a few days near Eugene, Or.
On my way, the manager of our park called to say my home was gone. Nothing left. Only 5 of 55 homes were standing. No firefighters were available, but the manager finally got there and got the people to leave. I had called him first and he was stuck in evacuee traffic. He had no warning either. 100 old people plus several more parks were left to burn with NO warning, but he finally got them all out. We have no rentals in this area, no motel room left, one full shelter, and NO one is providing any assistance to anyone.
I got out with the clothes on my back and Bugs the cat.
It looks like Dresden. But the insult of losing everything isn't enough. I remembered Facebook and the pictures of my ancestors and long gone family was still there!! I tried all night.. no facebook without passwords....I didn't even take my computer. I lost it all.
The post office charges you and demands a credit card to forward mail. My bank even burned down.
I pray my neighbors all survived. But I have no idea where we all will go. You can't even rent without 'papers'.
Really sorry to hear about your loss, AuntB. We’re in the California bay area and had to evacuate for a couple of days so we got a taste of that but nothing like what you been through. Truly sad.
Can you make it to Virginia?
Red Cross is doing NOTHING. NO one has offered help to the entire Medford area that I can find except a nursing home in Canyonville for $1200 a month.
Thank you, Appy. YOu are a doll. So many long distance patriots have offered. But I’m staying here to my last breath to fight that bitch Kate Brown. Yeah, I said it!
So sorry hear this. Sending many prayers for you and all others who are having to deal with these fires.
“But Im staying here to my last breath to fight that bitch Kate Brown. Yeah, I said it!”
With that attitude, you’ll do fine. You have something to live for! :)
You go, girl. We have 5 bedrooms next to the National Forest in the Appalachian hills just in case. High tomorrow is supposed to be 72
This is horrible news. I wish I lived on the west coast to offer assistance. All I can do is pray for you and Bugs, and that you will find the help you need for now, so you can work on getting back on your feet. I can’t even imagine how you must feel. I’m 73, and not in the best of health either. I don’t have much, but I would feel bad about losing what family remembrances I have. Please know you are in our prayers, and please keep us posted on how you are doing.
Geez, it’s like old Freeper Power Hour. You guys rock
twotone has been pinging me about the Portland list
I am SO sorry to hear of your horrible disaster, AuntB. Thank God you were able to evacuate and get to safety.
Kiddo you got spunk on steroids!! So glad you are on our side!
What about a GoFundMe page for you and your neighbors?
Can you go to your son’s temporarily? I will be keeping you and Bugs in my prayers. Please let us FReepers know if there is any way that we can help you.
My prayers are with you.
The freeway south was closed til yesterday, I had find a place to lie down last night, so now I am 4 hours away, sick and unable to drive. Now I am trying to figure out how to get back there to hire someone to help me go through rubble. Just a wedding ring to find, would be nice.
I just love my fellow FReepers and feel blessed to be a part of this community for the last 18 years!
“Helicopter view of some of the southern Oregon destruction. Its just terrible....”
At what point...if any...does Oregon decide they’ve had enough of democrat/antifa/BLM government?
I am so sorry for your and everyone’s losses. I can’t even imagine it. I am glad you got out, and will remember you to God.
Glad that you are safe.
What a nightmare!
The link below is for other Freepers to see the horror and intensity of this fire.
This fire may have been started by an arsonist. Antifa thugs have been starting fires in many Oregon places.
I’m so sorry for you. In addition to intentionally praying for you, I’ll add you to the prayer list at church. Wish there was more that I could do. :(
